I LOL'd. But apart from that, there's a nugget of truth in this. Punk is so fast that you can get a good taste of a song in 1 minute, unlike other genres. And, well, I wasn't expecting it to change a great deal in the second minute. Come on, that's fair.

I've tried in the past and just thought i wasn't ready. Listening to all these links confirms it.

the punk songs and bands that have impacted me seem to be adaptable to a few different styles of music cause ultimately its just a good song. bad religion, husker du, (sorry) replacements, social D etc.... The base song is great but the punk rock approach is what the artist chose to deliver the song. Many of my favorite punk songs also sound great on acoustic guitar, countrified, rock n roll'd out, etc.

The core of the song stems from a folky approach perhaps. They are all great song writers first and foremost. Many of them start off as punk players because Punk ws the genre that opened the door to many young aspiring children.

I can't really defend Matt's drumming on the song; I agree with you, it's pretty drab overall. I was putting up a defense for punk drumming, or at least punk rhythm section. It may less be the genre and more that Matt can't do this genre well.

I know what punk drumming's meant to do, and I respect the skill of great punk drummers, it just doesn't really interest me. If I listen to fast music, it's also got to be pretty complex. So I like 'math rock' like Dillinger Escape Plan' because it's based in hardcore punk but is really complicated rhythmically. You just couldn't be Matt Cameron and play that shit. Feel free to recommend me some punk music based on anything I've said, by the way. I am open to it.

Well, I'm probably not the best person to ask; I feel familiar with the big names, but I'm sure there's more underground stuff that is better than what I could recommend. That being said, Earl Hudson from Bad Brains; the guy does some amazing stuff...I think Topper Heddon from The Clash did great work with a diverse range of material. I don't know if you'd call him punk per se, but I like Martin Atkins a lot (who played with Public Image Ltd, among other places).

I'd agree that punk wouldn't overall be a place I'd go to for complex drumming, but that's not necessarily what I respond when listening to drummers.

I think it's what makes them appealing. To me at least. They're an old school rock band essentially. The fact that they apparently never succeed at being punk or hair metal if we're talking 10 is a strength rather than a weakness in my opinion.
