Guys. I'm stuck up on storm watch duty--the least you could do is humor me.

I have no opinion on Solange either way; apart from knowing who she is and being vaguely aware that she had a critically acclaimed record last year, she's never really been on my radar.tragabigzanda wrote:What do you see when you look at Solange?Kevin Davis wrote:I don't begrudge you your opinion, I just don't relate to being so hung up on all this nonmusical stuff (whether she comes from a rich family, what she feels her responsibilities are as an artist, etc.). We had a similar conversation in the Band of Horses thread. It's just not how I listen to or think about music at all.

Can't say I regret posting the Pitchfork Fest headliners after wading through some of the nonsense from the past couple of pages.

Re: Let's All Laugh at Pitchfork
I am a bit dumbfounded at these comments about Solange, particularly the SNL performances, which I found completely beautiful. I hadn't given her a second thought in years and I was pretty blown away by those performances and quite a bit of the new album.
Honestly, I feel like I'm not watching/listening to the same things as a lot of people on here from the bizarre and out-of-proportion reactions to things sometimes.

This is her on Fallon, but if I'm not mistaken she did this on SNL as well. To me this is sheer beauty, both visually and musically.

Re: Let's All Laugh at Pitchfork
That Fallon performance is fantastic -- I like that a lot better than the track that was posted a few pages back, which was okay but nothing special in my opinion. I've got "A Seat at the Table" playing now -- sounds pretty good to me, goes down smooth, and she's got a versatile voice that seems capable of navigating classical R&B runs (if not as commandingly as big sis) as well as going to moodier, breathier places. On "Don't Wish Me Well" she actually reminds me a bit of Sarah Cracknell from Saint Etienne (a '90's dance-pop group that some see as the underground precursor to groups like Ace of Base, etc.) -- I always thought her voice had a kind of subtle, ethereal "goodness" about it, and I like the shades of that I hear in Solange's voice here. What really brings this album home is the piano flourishes; they're employed with the kind of sparse repetitiveness of early '90's hip-hop samples, but they nonetheless call to mind '70's soul/R&B. A lot of influences coming together at one juncture in an enjoyable way -- definitely worth some accolades in my book, though it would take some deeper listening before I'd be prepared to rank it above or even alongside Rihanna or Chance or Tribe or some of the jazz I liked from last year.
