Do people not like the end? I think its a really good song but i don't see it mentioned with the best of backspacer

I'm actually not sure. I think that song is BEAUTIFUL. Although, I don't think it should be considered a Pearl Jam song, but that's a different topic.

Johnny Guitar might be the only Backspacer song to stand the test of time, imo. My wife doesn't like it either, but she's less patient with PJ these days. She's blanketly dismissed Backspacer as not good enough, and who can blame her?

yeah I dont feel the need to revisit Backspacer anymore. There is no depth there. You either like it or you dont. I wish Johnny Guitar was a little more fleshed out, but I think it still works pretty well.

I realize now that I really enjoy all of these songs. Enjoying Backspacer is completely justified based on the strength of the 3 songs above.

And, whoever has a problem with S/T needs to check their head, that album shreds!

Yeah, The End is a definite highlight.

Johnny Guitar would be a lot more palatable to me if the Lyrics were better.

I think they do the job it was trying to do.

I agree. A trailing off and spoken 'something else' would've been better but it doesn't bother me.

I've never had a big tears moment like I did the first time I heard the album version.
The bootleg had been on my computer for months and I didn't even know. But it didn't land on me quite the way the album version did. Knocked me sideways completely. Still does sometimes.

I haven't listened it in a while but I remember not really liking eds voice on The End , or just breathe for that matter. I don't really like the melody either. Maybe I just have no soul.

I feel that emotion, thanks to having stepkids. It's slightly diminished by the fact that my wife doesn't like the song much though. I mean she's the one with the maternal attachment so my crying over The End feels a bit silly.

I actually enjoy some of live audience bootlegs of the song (pre-album) more than the album version. I'm sure its just the source recording, but some strings he picks are more pronounced on the audience recording and I was hoping he would pick it that way on the album version. For example when he sings "People change....." the strings he picks there sound much louder than the rest. This happens really at every line in the early versions (or again just the recordings)

I hope they don't overdo the ballads on Lightening Bolt vocally, musically....productionlly.


If the album version of speed of sound was the same as the demo it would be the best song on backspacer. As it stands, its heinous.
