Yes, this is precisely what I was getting at. People who luckily fell in with a group of great musicians or at least catchy song writers.fyfe79 wrote:If we're discussing people who were blessed to find themselves in successful bands

Re: Talentless Hacks: The worst musicians in successful band
Ozzy.
Tony wrote the riffs, Geezer wrote the lyrics. Not many singers can get away with not writing the words they sing, especially if they don't sing them particularly well or have much stage presence when doing so.
Blessed a second time to find the Blizzard Of Ozz guys who wrote everything for his solo albums, and of course Ozzy (or Sharon, whatever) decided not to even credit them. Pulled the same trick repeatedly in the 80's. Then had the nerve to re-record the parts for the re-issues in the 00's.
It's amazing what he's been forgiven for in the rock/metal world. Credit to him though I suppose, he's made the absolute most of his limitations.

I don't really know how accurate this is because I've never paid much attention to the band, but I've always assumed that Dave Grohl has all of the talent in the Foo Fighters. Maybe their drummer and Pat Smear are good, I don't know.

That's pretty much what I assumed.tragabigzanda wrote:Dave Grohl is talented. The other guys are not bad musicians, but they're not doing anything that a million others guys couldn't do in that band. But Pat Smear is still cool AF.

No, you're right. The Foo's are essentially a one man band. Taylor Hawkins has always got on my nerves. Good, albeit over-rated drummer, but has really pushed himself to the front of that band in terms of perceived importance. Started doing backing vocals - fine. Started singing songs - not so hot. Started going out front, playing guitar and singing - no thanks. Wouldn't be surprised if he sacks Dave Grohl next!PHATJ wrote:I don't really know how accurate this is because I've never paid much attention to the band, but I've always assumed that Dave Grohl has all of the talent in the Foo Fighters. Btw, he has a side band called Taylor Hawkins & The Coat-Tail Riders. Indeed.

Nate Mandel's been there since the start and keeps his head down. Pat Smear is cool and was there at the start too (and does a mean backing vocal - check 'Hey Johnny Park' live), and Chris Siflett knows the score too, and keeps the head down. But Hawkins? Uggh...tragabigzanda wrote:Dave Grohl is talented. The other guys are not bad musicians, but they're not doing anything that a million others guys couldn't do in that band. Mendel is a badass bass player. I haven't listened to any Foos since the one with Learn to Fly, but check out his bass playing on the first couple of Sunny Day Real Estate albums.fyfe79 wrote:Nate Mandel's been there since the start and keeps his head down. Re: Talentless Hacks: The worst musicians in successful band
Yeah I don't know how good of a bass player he was but he wrote the songs. Vince Neil is the answer in that band. I was listening to them the other day and even when he was young he was straining to barely hit the notes. He just had the look they wanted.doone wrote:I think he wrote most of their hits so depends on if you like the Crue, I guess.tommymtcom wrote:Wasn't Nikki sixx famously talentless?
