Re: What movies are you watching?
I don't even mean this as a bad thing. I just think it's pretty obvious when looking at the movies of people like Godard, Haneke, Bergman, Weerasethakul, Bresson, Kiarostami, etc., that they are of one aesthetically unified genre, just as you could say the same about horror movies made by Craven, Carpenter, Hooper, etc.

Steve Albini wrote:Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Man, I couldn't finish this. I wanted to. But I felt like I was being attacked and condescended to and treated like a piece of shit.LoathedVermin72 wrote:For those interested, one of the greatest pieces of film criticism ever written: http://keepingmybrainalive.blogspot.com ... ience.html

But that's probably fair. I really do want to read it. But I feel like that kind of criticism accomplishes nothing. It seems like it's trying to be superior to the supposed people who feel like they are superior. I don't know. I have a hard time with all of this. Like you said, it's probably my fault. God forbid I just like things without need to label and classify to the nith degree. *shrugs*

Re: What movies are you watching?
But I should probably see the movie being critiqued before I read the review, right? I mean, that only seems fair.

Re: What movies are you watching?
Haha, I was being semi-facetious. I didn't mean to insult you. But I think part of understanding criticism is being willing and able to confront personal beliefs and attitudes. A critic highlighting and explaining things they have a problem with shouldn't be taken as an insult, even if they are being critical of a group you may feel you belong to.durdencommatyler wrote:Ouch.LoathedVermin72 wrote:We get what we deserve.durdencommatyler wrote:Man, I couldn't finish this.
