OK, fair enough. I thought this whole back and forth was about dime and everyone talking about Backspacer bringing in this whole new fanbase.McParadigm wrote:There's a difference between "successful" and "game changer." "The Fixer" was talked about as one of the "Songs of Summer" back in 2009 by New York Magazine, fwiw. A wider audience certainly took notice of PJ for Backspacer than they had for years.
http://www.vulture.com/2009/08/song_of_ ... the_s.htmlRock is a tougher call — honestly, there just aren’t many good options — so we’re crowning Pearl Jam’s “The Fixer” despite its late entry into the game.

First post, loooong time lurker, like before S/T came out. Great to see so many digging MYM, it really is a bad ass little tune. Ed's voice in the bridge really caught me, along with Mike's handiwork on the solo and the small nuances in the outro. Like many I was taken back when I first listened and realized it was another punk PJ song, but this one works and works really frigin well. IMO, best debut single since I Am Mine.

I don't mind the album title but the artwork is pretty blech... MYM on the other hand is pretty awesome. I was let down by The Fixer and thought Backspacer was a huge disappointment. If there are more tracks on the new one like MYM then I think the record will be a pretty solid one. Can't wait to hear it live on Tuesday in London with hopefully a few other new ones.

The artwork really does remind me of that Zwan record.

If you type pearl jam into the YouTube search bar, just breathe is the only song that shows up that isn't from 98 or earlier. That shows........something

A lot of people must be listening to adult contemporary stations on Last.fm to push Just Breathe that high.McParadigm wrote:Last 6 months, last.fm:stupidmop wrote:If you type pearl jam into the YouTube search bar, just breathe is the only song that shows up that isn't from 98 or earlier. Yeah, I think Just Breathe could work in some formats that their louder singles couldn't.
I think one thing that makes me view the last few records as commercial disappointments is how the band seemed to approach them. Obviously, I don't know this with any certainty, but I kind of got the impression that they were expecting the last two records (and especially S/T) to be viewed critically and commercially as their big comeback records, their version of what happened with All You Can't Leave Behind in U2's career, after Pearl jam had done two dark, relatively noncommercial records in a row. The fact that that didn't happen, even if they didn't dip in their sales or singles, was probably a mixed victory for them.
