What movies are you watching?

I need to hear some opinions about The Grand Budapest Hotel. Because the movie started to be a complete mish-mash of "spot the cameo!" which is what Wes Anderson movies are mostly anyway but then the story started to rise above that and it was all the better for it. In the end I think I liked it, but I don't think I could watch it again because of the weird start.

Excellent performance by Ralph Fiennes though. Heads and shoulders above the rest.

I love it. Probably my all time favorite Wes Anderson film. Maybe #2 but certainly no lower than that. Great film. Great images. Great storytelling. Great performances. Great directing. I just goddamn love everything about it.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Team Bune. My 2nd-least favorite Anderson pic, after Bottle Rocket, for the reason bune listed, plus the superfluous "story within a story" setup.

I will concede that I have only watched it twice. It's very possible that the long term replay value isn't there.

Whats the problem with Wes´s tripod in that movie? It was broken or something? There is no movement at all, no storytelling at all... just a few pans ..and the tiresome art direction? the colors, the vintage objects, even the ¨serious¨ acting.... its just Wes Anderson´s greatest hits.

I'm not sure what you mean by "serious acting." I thought it was one of the more playful, whimsical, and funny movies he's made. But I'm fucking weird.

It was like - especially on the skiing/sledding section - like a mishmash of Fantastic Mr. Fox and live-action.

Though the complete lack of an attempt at accents by some of the actors (cough Ed Norton cough) was distracting.

They only seem to act in one tone. Like every Wes Anderson movie, except in his previous ones it worked. Well, not in that horrible adrien brody movie or that boring Moonrise Kingdom one.

100% agree. This is the other one that I go back and forth with. GBH and MK are my #1 and #2 for sure. The day seems to dictate which I put in the top spot.

I need to revisit Life Aquatic. As it stands its my least favorite of his films. But I don't think it's a bad movie or anything. Just didn't quite click for me. But so many of my friends really love it. I need to check it out again and see what I see.

He is alive at the end. It's kind of a joke. She goes to church alone and stuff (he's probably in hospital then) then the shiny arc of light behind his head...but it's just a light and he's in the backyard with a cane arguing with the friend about how to grill burgers properly. He's alive, and I'm glad of it.
