I left it for a few hours, came back, went from 'Yeah, I like it a lot actually' to 'Holy shit this is actually awesome.'

And that's in spite of everything I don't love about it, which is all still there.

It's a blend of S/T and Backspacer I think. The lead guitar is still shiny and Backspacer-ish, but the rhythm guitar is more raw.

I've been beaten down
I feel I'm done believing and
Now the truth is coming out
What they're taking is more than a bow
They've taken young innocence and then they throw it on a burning pile

Well, I am no longer saying
Mind Your Manners

I caught myself believing
That I needed God
And if he's out there somewhere
We sure could use him now
Tried my patience
My patience tried
This world's no longer good enough, makes me want to cry

Well, I am no longer saying
Mind your manners
Some are saying

Self realized and metaphysically redeemed
May not live another life
May not solve a mystery
Right around the corner could be bigger than ourselves
We could will it to the sky
Or we could something else

No longer saying
Mind your manners
Always praying

Self realized and metaphysically redeemed
May not live another life
May not solve a mystery
Right around the corner could be bigger than ourselves
We could will it to the sky
Or we could something else

Go to heaven!
That's swell!
Hope you like your
Living hell!

Go to heaven!
That's swell!
Hope you like your
Living hell!

Go to heaven!
That's swell!
Hope you like your
Living hell!

LIVING HELL!

I now think it's:

"While all along they're saying / 'Mind your manners.' / That's all I'm saying.'"

And at the end it's "How do you like your / Living hell?"

I'm really finding the "GO TO HEAVEN, THAT'S SWELL..." section to be the most *fun* / least embarrassing *fun* repetitive section since... for a long time.

It's really quite reminiscent of both Brain of J and DTE. How cool would it be to get a DTE-style video? I doubt we will but I can dream.

I had another possible WTF "lightning bolt" revelation last night, about Backspacer, but I'm not sure I'm ready to make it public yet.

It's more specifically about the Richard Cheese-style Fixer video.

Listening to this song and looking at the concepts which seem to be surfacing around "Lightning Bolt", I'm now wondering whether the whole Fixer Target video was a... fun, silly, not-to-be-taken-seriously, deliberately-ham-fisted and terribly executed joke. Maybe Pearl Jam found it hilarious to make. Can someone view it again with that mindset and see if there's any chance I'm right?

How could anyone compare this to Brain of J? C mon. This is an average "funny" song.

I hate this type of Pearl Jam. They just don´t get that this "i´ll make music like the music of my favorite bands" doesn´t work at all. Every time they try to hard, they fail. Pearl Jam has been with a lack of personality since Riot Act. That was the last real album. Maybe it wasn´t that good but it did have character and it was unique. The last two, and seems like this one is not going any further, were like a compilation of sound that the guys think that "is cool". And that´s it. There is no urgency or need to create. And that is crap.
Probably I´m just to old school. But this was my favorite band because there was something about them that did matter. Not anymore.

I don't recognise you. I wasn't comparing the song to Brain of J, I was comparing the vocal style to Brain of J. But just to humour you, I'm going to tell you that the guitar riff, coupled with the vocal, is very much like Brain of J. I don't necessarily care what the overall emotional impression of the song is, the fact is that musically, it's not unsimilar to Brain of J.

Nah, I don't think they were like "lol guys we just made a bunch of money but as a jk.". Sorry harmy.

Some of the vocals remind me a little of Go.

I can almost sing "Whoooose got the brain of J and... etc." as this song begins. How could anyone *not* see that?

Also, incidentally, on my first few listens to Riot Act (an album I'm pretty much in love with), I was like 'Not very original, a bit derivative, but I like it. Let's see how this grows.' I had the same feeling for Yield. I didn't for Binaural but that's because I mostly hated it for years.

So you know, what I've realised is that my "Meh" feeling in hearing new PJ is not a new thing. It's followed me right through their career.

I think it's pretty clear that they're not really taking the video seriously (or that it's meant to be a bit fun and silly). Deliberately ham fisted I couldn't say. Probably not.
