The band themselves in the video just look like they are doing what they did at every show in 2009. Stone jumping around with his new little long hairs and all. If they are smirking to themselves or making a joke of themselves and the video then they were doing that to every show in 2009 too.
let's not forget that they shot a staged performance video for "i am mine" back when they were still cool, and that came across fairly flat too. that song is a heavier song, and the performance matched that. the fixer is an up tempo, sing along song, so naturally, the band's performance was more lively to match its music - and i think their energy comes across awkwardly when not in the context of an actual show being played on an actual stage.
The difference was that the Riot Act videos didn't have a "live" audience and they work much better as a result. I still like all those videos.
no they suck because eddie has short hair
They suck because Eddie has short hair and they're better because there's no crowd. Both of these statements are true.

why am i so into discussing this? maybe i'm just trying to figure out why eddie went from super cool to dork in my mind.
It's a fascinating transition.
i mean, the obvious and real answer is he got old, but that's too convenient. i want to delve deeper and really cook up some conspiracies.

I don't buy the "He got old" thing. I just think that he really suddenly wanted to do something different and found the old stuff embarrassing. Some of his fans remained wedded to the old stuff and that's how life goes. Basically, over all, I personally think that their latter work has involved a lot of experimentation into just how to do this kind of music as grown adults, fathers and husbands. And the experimentation is not over. But I would hope that in the next album or two, they will finally have it figured out and we'll have a new kind of Pearl Jam to follow us into old age. I'm still fairly confident that Ed has still (barely) escaped becoming Bono, and for that I'm grateful.

I thought everyone was. I haven't necessarily added my gayness-for-Eddie to my realisation-of-sexuality credentials.

Oof... that's cruel. I like it.

You just feel as if he'd always have one eye out for something better.

Yeah, like a scrawny Icelandic rainbow pirate.

When I realised he was hot as hell it was like a Lightning Bolt.

I think the gist of the last few pages can be summed up as-

IT'S NOT "SOMETHING ELSE" YOU GUYS.

I'll go on the record. Prepare the stocks for my eventual humiliation.

Or you could something else.

Um... OK. But there's nothing humiliating about a man enjoying the idea of fellatio.

Haha, I can hear that. And it would be awesome if Ed ripped out of this one into a rendition of "I bet that you'd look good on the dance floor."

It'll probably just sound creepy. Like his Dream a Little Dream cover.
