really, any non-IPA (or APA), lager, pilsner where the hops degrade with time.

so as a rule of thumb, typically stouts, porters, barleywines, wild ales, or lambics can be good to age. in fact, with bourbon-barrel aged stouts and porters, i like to age them for at least 4-6 months to let the heat die off (otherwise you're not tasting the underlying beer, but just the barrel).

as a caveat, though: be careful with stouts aged with subtle additives such as vanilla, cocoa, coconut, etc. the longer you age them, the greater likelihood that those flavors will eventually fall off.

I'm busting balls...
I love beer, but my problem is that I've got a tiny frame -- I'm good for maybe two beers before the bloating takes over. Which is why I tend to be more active in the Whiskey thread (and RM needs a good wine thread, BTW). But I will say that apart from coffee porter/stouts (many of which I love), I have yet to experience a "flavored" beer, or beer made with adjuncts, that holds a candle to any of the great Germanic beers made with just hops, barley, yeast, and water. So while I'm really blown away by phatj's beer collection (righetous!), I haven't had too many of those beers; and most times that I try a new beer, it's typically an American microbrew made in the Germanic style.

it's definitely an acquired taste. the problem with most of those beers is that they come in 22 oz or .750 ml format, and it's nearly impossible to drink one by yourself at 12% ABV+

that's why i'm more into sours than anything. they're barrel-aged, but they typically ring in at sub 6.5%. plus they're amazing. drinking a peach or apricot wild ale in the summer is pretty cathartic.
