Re: Sometimes vs. Off He Goes vs. Who You Are
Sometimes is nice (interesting sentiment, good lyrics, nice atmosphere) but it lacks something
Off He Goes is lovely music, and strong performances all around, but I can't stand the self-referential and self-indulgent lyrics.
Once I figured out that Who You Are was poking fun at its own self-seriousness I really fell in love with that song. If I'm honest it's probably my favorite song on No Code these days.

Who You Are, but it's really a toss up between all three.

OHG and WYA are the worst songs on NC. Sometimes is one of their best ever.

I love Off He Goes so much. That song has meant so much to me over the years. I do also really love Sometimes too, though. If this gets to the point where my vote can make Sometimes the winner over WYA, I'll totally change my vote to make that happen.

I'm going with Sometimes. It's the epitome of No Code for me. Soft and contemplative and restrained with underlying uneasiness, and the atmosphere and use of field recording thunder/rain just puts it over the top.

I'll never forget getting No Code home. Ripping open the plastic and pressing play on that CD... Hearing Sometimes for the first time was such a fucking head trip. It was so amazing.

It was the absolute perfect song choice to be the first song on the album after Vitalogy. Such an extreme dichotomy and perfectly sets the tone. I remember thinking, "Oh shit, this is different" and had NO idea what to expect for the rest of the album. It created so much intrigue.durdencommatyler wrote:Well said.bodysnatcher wrote:I'm going with Sometimes. It's the epitome of No Code for me. Totally agree. I got chills and I thought to myself, "holy shit, this is a major shift... what the fuck is this band up to??!!"bodysnatcher wrote:It was the absolute perfect song choice to be the first song on the album after Vitalogy. And then Hail Hail happened and I wanted to scream and jump out of my skin. It was so amazing. They never released another album that gave me anything remotely like that feeling I got when I first listened to No Code.

Off He Goes, with Who You Are as a close second.
Of course the wrong song is winning.

Re: Sometimes vs. Off He Goes vs. Who You Are
I like Off He Goes, though it's not a song I find myself returning to often. When I do, it's always a pleasant surprise. The music on this, particularly the sweep of those instrumental bridges, are great. Who You Are is playful, although some of the lyrics choices are a bit off-putting.
But Sometimes just has something else going on, something outside what this band is usually capable of. I love the stream of conscious feel this song inhabits; it's the sonic equivalent of that thought that comes right before sleep that you'll never remember in the morning.

Who You Are for many reasons, but most of all because when I first heard it on the radio, I was drawn to the what the fuck is this of the drum pattern. Hellooooooo Jack Irons.

Man, this match up for me is like if stip had to vote between Alive, The Fixer, and WWS. That just simply means I love all three, but I'm going with Who You Are.
God I love this album.
God I love this album.

Who You Are is so much better than these other two.
