There's a moment in the midst of the breakdown of the bridge... after the "let's call in an angel" part where you can hear someone (Jeff? stone?) yell something like, "Come on Jack!" Or "Let's go Jack!"
Is this for real?
Trag says the person is saying "Turn it down!" Keep up, 'slow!
It's all too much!
I don't know what either of them is talking about. But I didn't hear the HWIC sample in PMPM until after about 2 years of listening to it. *shurgs*

Also, I'm not sure I know what anyone is ever saying on a Pearl Jam record.
It's right around the 3:14 mark of the song. Right towards the end of the echoing guitar breakdown at the end of the bridge. There's a moment where someone yells something in the background, and I always thought it was something along the lines of, "Let's go Jack!" Because right after, Jack brings the song out of the bridge and right back into the chorus.

I could always hear it fairly clearly in my car, but I just listened on Spotify and it's a little tougher to hear. Try a set of headphones.

I get this. But I just listened to Given To Fly for the first time in a while after trying to find the above moment in No Way. And goddamit I got all sorts of teary eyed while listening to it. It really hit hard with me right now -- I've been fighting depression with work, and I didn't realize until about a month ago. And shit that song just hit me in the feels.

Given to Fly. C'mon. No Way is a fantastic tune and maybe a little "cooler" but Given to Fly is top notch PJ. Especially that studio cut. beautifully produced and an incredible performance . What a song.

I'm not trying to be "too cool for school" or anything like that. I promise. This isn't me being a hipster. I've never loved Given to Fly the way others have. Not even back in the day. The first time I heard it I thought it was cool, certainly not a bad song, not even CLOSE to a bad song. It's a really good song. But it's never been as powerful to me as it has to others.

No Way is absolutely a better song in my opinion. No Way hits me in the gut in a way Given to Fly never has.

No Way is a perfect song and easily in my top 10 for PJ. GTF is great but not in the same league for me.

Agreed. Even when the single dropped off, my general reaction was "Jack Irons is amazing! The rest of this song feels pretty obvious for Pearl Jam." I can admire it for the powerful composition that it is, but Pearl Jam had previously taken me to those soaring heights with songs like Alive, Dissident, etc. Jack's "world beat" approach to the song isn't enough to set it apart from the others, whereas No Way is just gnarly and weird and sort of brilliant.

Ok, I finally heard it but had to put on headphones and jack it way way up. You guys must have the ears of a fucking cocker spaniel.

I still can't get over adamdude (?) pointing out that Ed says "admire my 12-inch cock" off-mic during Do the Evolution at the 1998 Melbourne show that was broadcast on radio.
