Re: Can't Keep vs. Cropduster vs. All or None
LTRP is an awful song. If it were released as a b side like hitchhiker...it would get more love That is the problem with modern day PJ. their standards have been lowered.
ITs not that cool of a riff. Its a bunch of musicians coming home from the bar late at night and fucking around and thinking "oh yea! thats a fun song derp de derp!"
If it were released as a b side? I would probably enjoy it more.
Alas, it is near the closing of the Lightning Bolt album and it seems like it was only thrown on there to appease stone.
But i blame stone for it because.....

Well, since Can't Keep is trailing a distant third, gonna go with Cropduster.

I agree with this. And I also love the intro/verse riff, it's fun and dirty. The chorus is what ruins it.96583UP wrote:i agree, people seem to despise this song but i was encouraged by it when i heard it. they never seemed to do anything interesting with it live though, which was surprising to me ... seemed like it had a great framework on which they could do some extended jamming and soloing or something ...Birds in Hell wrote:Let the Records Play is one of the only moments on the last two records that I can listen to without wondering where it all went horribly wrong.

Riot Act is the only good album Pearl Jam released since the 2000s started, fact.

Someone here pointed out that this song is int he vein of T rex. Especially the chorus.tragabigzanda wrote:I agree with this. And I also love the intro/verse riff, it's fun and dirty. So, that made me understand the song a little bit better with that context.
However, as far as what stone can bring to the table? F-

To be honest, when's the last time any PJ song had a distinctive, memorable guitar riff? The End, I guess, has an interesting fingerpicked progression, but that's been about it for over a decade.

I haven't desired to learn a pj song on guitar in years.digster wrote:To be honest, when's the last time any PJ song had a distinctive, memorable guitar riff? The End, I guess, has an interesting fingerpicked progression, but that's been about it for over a decade.

Re: Can't Keep vs. Cropduster vs. All or None
This is tough, because all three of these songs would have beaten quite a few other Riot Act songs if they hadn't been pitted against each other. I'll go with All or None; the lyrics are lovely, and the way Ed approaches the song is fantastic. This is Exhibit A that sometimes holding back means it's all the more affecting when you push things up even just a little; think of how powerful that last verse feels, and all he does is shift an octave.
This song also has, bar none, my favorite Mike solo ever on record. I think Mike's a great guitarist, but his solos have never really moved me, with this being one big exception.

Re: Can't Keep vs. Cropduster vs. All or None
I like this, digster. And I love All or None. I would be happy to see it advance. My vote still goes to Cropduster, I've always loved it and I think it's deserving, but I may have to listen to them both to make sure. Either way one of them is going to win, so I'm happy.digster wrote:This is tough, because all three of these songs would have beaten quite a few other Riot Act songs if they hadn't been pitted against each other. I mean, particularly this matchup and Ghost/Thumbing/Save You....they're all on equal footing. More than anything, it just makes it clear to me how powerful this portion of the band's career was.

maybe im using riff wrong, but gsmf, the fixer, just breathe, and got some are all good. there are a number of really good songs on L-bolt but the guitar beds are not particularly memorabledigster wrote:To be honest, when's the last time any PJ song had a distinctive, memorable guitar riff? Re: Can't Keep vs. Cropduster vs. All or None
Man, I ADORE all of these. All top shelf songs. But, I gotta go Cropduster. That was an early favorite when Riot Act first dropped and has only gotten stronger over time. The song has aged better than almost any other Pearl Jam song I can think of right now. It's another one that belongs in the top 5 conversation.
Won't be sad if either of the other two take it, but goddamn I love Cropduster.

I don't like this new trend of "strategic" voting. Just vote for the song you like best!
