93-94 was PJ at a breakdown and implosion point. They were fragile, and Ed probably just did not have the personality and coping ability to handle an outspoken guy like that. He probably needed a therapist in the band, and I think Jack Irons served that role. Dave A just wasn't the guy who they needed at that point, it was probably break up or move on without him. And probably just didn't have the maturity to handle a guy like that when they felt like things were too high pressure to start with. I can't imagine Dave A going along with the middle-era, which is an era most of us love. I don't think he'd be down with it musically, commercially, or anything. Too bad, for the guy, I hope he's been okay all these years.

Re: HALL OF FAME!!!!!!
I like this point. Also I remember in Five Against One (it's been a while since I read it), I got the impression in 93-94 Stone was incredibly nervous that Ed would leave the band and easily take off by himself or with another group. And since this was/(is?) Stone's band and the pinnacle of his career at that point, he was willing to do anything to make sure Eddie was happy with the group. One example was Stone making the decision to cut everyone's pay and raise Eddie's (all money made was split equally 20%, afterwards Eddie made 28% everyone went down to 18%) and Eddie really could have cared less just fueling Stone's paranoia. Obviously firing Dave A was a band decision, but having Stone do it at a diner in public, and if I recall Dave A's retelling of the story, didn't Stone break down and just blame Eddie for the whole thing? I always felt like Stone was the upper hand in the decision to maintain Eddie's position in the band. Who knows how much the band really knows what happened besides Stone.Tuolumne wrote:I was just thinking today, as much as Dave A seems like a very personable and cool guy, and as good a drummer as he is, it was the right decision. Favorite part of Dave A's retelling though was after Stone told him he was out of the band, Stone looked at his wrist and saw he was wearing a woven bracelet. Him and Dave went out together and bought them the first time Dave came to Seattle and Stone said something like "Remember when we bought these together?" and Dave said "f*ck you" and promptly left lol

Re: HALL OF FAME!!!!!!
I do hope we get a real biographical book. I think the PJ20 movie and book was their first big stab at the retro thing. It was good for what it was, a 20 year set of highlights. I think they are still figuring out how to reminisce and talk about the old times. I think this sort of stuff is all new to them. They never even did a Behind the Music when everyone else doing it. Also, I'm not sure if I want them to divulge a bunch of juicy stuff just yet. I still think they're an awesome band right now (Backspacer is a top 4 album for me), so I'm one who thinks they still got it. I'd rather the warts and all bio be done 10-15 years from now, when it's a little more appropriate to look back and take stock on what went well and what did not.

I agree...one of the things that i respect from them is there was no drama from the inner circle in the press. I was really surprised to hear they werent communicating well in the No Code era because they always seemed like a tight unit...i also think SG did this very good too.

They all seem like pretty private dudes which is a big reason why it never played out in the press. No one is really looking for coverage.VinylGuy wrote:I agree...one of the things that i respect from them is there was no drama from the inner circle in the press. Matt Chamberlain on lead, eh?96583UP wrote:Maybe all the drummers will perform a song together as a band:
Dave Krusen: Vocals
Matt Chamberlain: Lead Guitar
Matt Cameron: Rhythm Guitar
Jack Irons: Bass
Dave A: Drums
And then they will achieve worldwide fame; which prompts Dave K to experience an identity crisis and divorce; who copes with it via scapegoating onto Dave A, because since Dave A is not insecure, it must mean that he is a sellout. Then Matt Cameron will take Dave A to breakfast and tell him he is out of the band.
