SW is pretty much the best track on LB. 3 stars at most.

Re: Yellow Moon vs. Swallowed Whole vs. Let the Records Play
Yellow Moon is outstanding. It's a latter day track that stands up with the early stuff.
Swallowed Whole is stupid.
Let the Records Play is at least different and fun.
But this is Yellow Moon all the way.

What song did Ed first say swallowed whole in? I pick it out every time I hear it, but I can't remember right now.
Anyway, Swallowed Whole. And Yellow Moon is better than the other one.

Re: Yellow Moon vs. Swallowed Whole vs. Let the Records Play
Like Joey, I love Yellow Moon. Excellent piece of writing and strong performances all around. It's vast, and dignified, and lonely and empty and regretful. Eddie sounds gorgeous on it. It's a great song.
Swallowed Whole is good, but I keep expecting it to get better and it never does. A little too close to a few other songs that they did just a bit better.
LTRP is a minor song but it's catchy and different and fun. I do wish Eddie wasn't doing that shinny thing with his voice, though.

Swallowed Whole is literally the only good song on this record.

Re: Yellow Moon vs. Swallowed Whole vs. Let the Records Play
Swallowed Whole just never came together for me. PJ has a bad habit of losing the momentum of a song by putting together verses and choruses without thinking how they will work together, and that happens here. The transitions in the song never sound natural; I don't know if the song was put together in the computer, but that's how it feels.
I don't have the hate for Let the Records Play others have, but it really is nothing I ever reach for. Yellow Moon is a fairly good song that suffers immensely from the production and some of Mike's playing, but there's a bit of greatness in there. It just needed to be recorded on another album. It gets my vote though.

Re: Yellow Moon vs. Swallowed Whole vs. Let the Records Play
If I remember correctly, Mike was shocked that Yellow Moon was something that found its way to the album, and Stone was similarly shocked about Let The Records Play.
And then Swallowed Whole is obviously an Ed song.
Sounds like Ed made that album.

Actually Mike was really pushing for Yellow Moon to be included on the album.bodysnatcher wrote:If I remember correctly, Mike was shocked that Yellow Moon was something that found its way to the album, and Stone was similarly shocked about Let The Records Play.

A solemn Ament song with Vedder lyrics, "Yellow Moon" almost didn't make the album, according to both guitarists. McCready championed it, however. "We ended up moving the key a little bit and that really brought the vocal out more in a really interesting way. But the odd time signature of that song creates something unique about that song," says Gossard. "In terms of a lead," explains McCready, "I feel that that was trying to actually write a beautiful part of a person ascending."
