In the right setting, Tremor Christ would be such a killer opener. It's kinda the furthest PJ ever went into dabbling with postpunk. Which is a shame, cause Ed seems to have been into postpunk back in the day.

Maybe this should be the next sign campaign.

Man... It's probably my #1 bucket list live song at this point. It was Hard to Imagine, but I finally got that one a while back. Now, it's Tremor Christ.

And I'm not a sign campaign guy either (that was a joke earlier). But if I was gonna bring one, it would be for this. Or Angel.

When I was looking at the list of shows it's been played at, I realized the only time I heard it live was at my first show, Soldier Field. I wonder if they just don't care for the song that much (in which case, they're insane).

Yeah, Angel is my wife's favorite Pearl Jam song. Every time we go to a show she asks if I think they'll play it. And I have to tell her there's absolutely zero chance. I'd love to hear it, but yeah, I think the ship sailed on that one a long, LONG time ago. Too bad really. It's a beautiful song.

On the other hand, part of what makes that song so special is that there isn't a lot else like it in the catalog.

Pearl Jam can never be punk because of Mike McCready. He cares what you think of them. PJ has moments of being punk influenced, some are good and some are just regrettable. Ed and Jeff are very comfortable with punk moments. I think of Long Island show in 2003. It started out as a very punk moment when Ed went into his rant. It didn't end punk when the band cuts the show short because people don't like them and Mike is on record as saying he was very uncomfortable with what went down. Push comes to shove PJ wants to be liked. While not impossible, that sentiment does make it very hard to be punk.
My kid's band plays punk music but they're not punk. They want to be liked, they will back down from musical confrontation. That's as close as Pearl Jam gets to punk.

Two of my brother's favorite pearl jam songs were the 2000 crown of thorns cover and the Eddie/Ben Harper indifference. When I took him to his first pj show he asked what the odds were of him getting either song. I told him basically zero.

I don't know. Jeff and Stone worked awfully hard at being liked for a long time. Maybe Jeff a bit less than Stone. Maybe. But I wouldn't lay all the ambitions at the feet of Mike McCready.

I realized I got that wrong. You can be punk and still want to be liked but I think being punk entails not caring when you're not liked or disliked.
