Re: BECK
His whole post-Sea Change period in the 2000s (Guero, Info and Modern Guilt) is fairly underrated I think. There's also a bunch of great stuff from the period that was unreleased, or relegated to soundtracks and such. I listened to Modern Guilt for the first time in a while recently, and that's an awesome little record.

Whatever you do, don't think for too long about how Beck is a Scientologist.

I like Beck n'all, but I have a hard time getting past the Scientology thing. I listen to him a lot less because of it.Simple Torture wrote:Whatever you do, don't think for too long about how Beck is a Scientologist.

Totally agree. I listen to that period perhaps more than any other these days.digster wrote:His whole post-Sea Change period in the 2000s (Guero, Info and Modern Guilt) is fairly underrated I think. Hot Tip: Lots of great songs on those records for get-togethers and party playlists!

I don't know; I know that that was the press tag for Guero ('he's finally going back to his Odelay roots!) but I don't really hear that beyond some surface similarities. Guero is alot darker thematically and musically, for one. It's probably his most successful attempt molding the blues he listened to as a kid with the more experimental, sound-collage side of his music.tragabigzanda wrote:You think? And The Information doesn't really sound like anything else in his catalog to me. It's a mess of a record, but that's what I like about it.

In all fairness, he's 3rd generation and was born into it. We all know what happens in that cult if you don't stick with your family. All I've ever heard him say about it is the standard "I've seen them do amazing things" bullshit that they all spout, so it's hard to say how involved he really is.darth_vedder wrote:True, I'm just a weirdoVinylGuy wrote:Whats the problem with that? He's also married to one of the Ribisi's, who are super into that shit.Wendy Carlos's Twin wrote:In all fairness, he's 3rd generation and was born into it. I still love his music but I can't say I don't think about it almost every time I listen.

You guys do know that a lot of musicians you listen to are probably christian, right? So how does that not turn you off from them but Scientology turns you off from Beck? Asking for a friend.

Is this a serious question? Have you read anything about Scientology ever? Look up "disconnection," for starters.E.H. Yes, it is outrageous and stupid. But it doesn't affect my enjoyment of his music. Neither does if someone believes that a magician running around 2,000 years ago saved all of mankind, even those that didn't believe in him and "killed" him.evenslow wrote:Is this a serious question?
