What's the cut-off point for gen y?

I was born in 1984 and I've never been sure which "gen" I am.

you're prolly a cusper - but I think of gen y as someone whose parents were baby boomers.

They call us "millennials," I think.

I'm 47, dct, I was 26 in 1992... Pearl Jam was/is made up of guys who have about as similar a musical experience of the world as me as I could ever hope for, really not just musical experience either - they were, in a very real way, people I knew.
when they, and Nirvana, and STP, and Soundgarden, and Dino Jr, and and and - all of them - burst onto the music scene it felt, i dunno, redeeming? like, who knew we had something worthwhile to sing about? I'd spent my life prior to that feeling there wasn't anything WORTH providing musical commentary on - I thought all those 60s and 70s bands you mention were it as far as musical product that could be influential in rock and roll, and they weren't really my music, they belonged to the boomers.

I was still much younger at the time, but I felt the same way (or as close as I imagine a 12/13/14 year old could feel to that experience). I can only imagine if I'd been in my 20s how much more rooted I would have felt to the movement (if that's not too strong a word). But, yeah, I remember feeling for the first time, especially when I heard Smells Like Teen Spirit and Not For You, that this was my music. I still do feel that way.

I've found a lot to latch onto in my 30s. Specifically, Tom Waits. He's done for 30s Joe what Pearl Jam did for teenage Joe. The Mynabirds are another example (though, in a very VERY different capacity). But nothing will ever replace that ownership, that comradery of the 90s -- of Pearl Jam, Nirvana, STP, etc.

He's just pissed because he thinks there are better versions of this same kinda thing out there, and too many people falling over themselves for this one. I get it. I do the same quite a bit, actually. It's sort of how I feel about American Beauty.

I know most people here really disliked (or at least were disappointed in) Pearl Jam Twenty. But I watched it tonight for the first time since it was in theaters and I've gotta tell ya... I'm FUCKING amped for this new album. This band really does just mean the whole wide world to me.

I really like pj20. It's a love letter rather than some real deep examination of band dynamics, controversies, or creative process. And while those are things I'd like to watch someday, I am also okay watching a love letter to a band I love.

Amen. But there are a lot more warts on the thing than I remember. Nothing too terribly in depth. But I was surprised to see just about every band member cry a few times. And all of them at a loss in sticky situations. I didn't remember it that way. Mostly because they skimmed over the "big" controversies, and attributed too much "process" to "fate" or "destiny" or "inspiration."

But yes, it's great to be a fan. And to celebrate. And while I never forgot, I had put some of that behind me a bit. It was nice to be reminded.

I'm officially, for better or worse, over the moon excited for Lighting Bolt.

I am pretty good at walking the tightrope between realistic expectations and wild hopes. Basically I am confident Ill get at least 4 to 5 songs that become part of my life, and possibly more. And I know how to let myself get swept up in the moment. I'll float along for a few weeks and enjoy myself immensely and then assess what is worth keeping.

i really like PJ20, its a love letter, it has some amazing footage, some great moments ( Cornell almost crying for Andy Wood, Eddie and Kurt, Neil Young and PJ playing together, Stone and Jeff moments prior the band) and even if its not the revelatory story some people thought it should have been, it was great.
I have the feeling this new record will reconcile the band with some of the fans who were pretty cynical about them these last couple of years.
