Re: Porch vs. Alive
My first and third (honestly maybe second) favorite pearl jam songs. Vote for Alive, but these are my two favorite song climaxes in the entire catalog. Maybe ever.

Re: Porch vs. Alive
Both are good songs that I don't seek out ever and could possibly never hear again. Alive just. If it was just Dave A era Porch would win hands down.

Re: Porch vs. Alive
Go listen to the BoB remix of Alive on RVM with headphones. It's the definitive version of the song as far as I'm concerned. It dials back the sense of space just enough to make it feel like it could have been on Vs without losing the grandeur of Ten

Porch or Alive?
Is that the question?
And if so, if so, who answers, WHO ANSWERRRRRRRRRRS!?!?
I answer, my friends.
(My vote is for the song Alive)

Re: Porch vs. Alive
When I vote in these tournaments, I tend to take everything into account--not just how much I enjoy each song on its own merits and the first way I heard it (more often than not on a record), but also how it's gained or lost life as a live track that I've heard on countless bootlegs. I like Porch a lot, I really do, but it's been played so much in recent years that it's become skippable for me. The thing is, so has Alive in some senses--I much preferred this song when it could show up anyplace in PJ's setlists than to the stirring rock-anthem status it gets when it's almost always played in the same slot every show (the last four shows I've been to, it's been played 3rd-to-last every time--and at 3 of those 4 shows, Porch has either been a first-set closer or an encore closer). So this is a rare time when I'm trying to dig back into just the songs themselves and to think about which hits me harder, which I get most excited to hear when it comes up on the LP, and things like that. For me it's Alive, which still packs a punch, still has an awesome riff, and still sort of soars for me. Definitely Alive.

In 2006, when voting was open on TSIS, Porch beat Alive 646 votes to 418.
My vote's for Alive.
