I hate voting against betterman, but Last Exit is the second best song in the prelims.

Betterman, but I won't be mad when Last Exit wins.

Last Exit. It's probably a top 10 PJ song for me.

Last Exit gets the vote. Better Man is great too.

Last Exit. But if it was Betterman (live) then it might be a closer call for me.

It really is. I think maybe more than any other PJ song, I take this one for granted. It was so popular I discarded it and would preach the deep cuts like In My Tree, Faithfull, or Insignificance but all things considered, Betterman really is one of their best songs.PHATJ wrote:Better Man is great too.

I did the same. Never disliked it, but basically discarded it for years. Once I gave it some credit I really began to appreciate and enjoy it again.darth_vedder wrote:It really is. My 3 year old wilds out to the first three Vitalogy tracks and that makes me happy.

Re: Last Exit vs. Betterman
I love Better Man, and I think it's come to be fairly underrated, in some ways. But it's not Last Exit. In a way, the song sounds like a culmination of everything the band was going for in those early years. It has the brute aggression of their early stuff, is chock full of "rhythmic things that butt up against each other in a cool way," but has that sandpaper rawness that Ed brought to the Vitalogy material.

Re: Last Exit vs. Betterman
I remember hearing Betterman for the first time. It's a great memory for me and one of the reasons I adore the song so much. It's a great song that I feel is easy to toss aside because of it's "hit" status and the fact that it's been overplayed for 20 years. But it's still a highlight in Pearl Jam's career and I never tire of it.
Last Exit is still the better song, though. And, I think, a far more rewarding listen all these years later.

Re: Last Exit vs. Betterman
Betterman is one hell of a pop song. Probably the best pop-rock song I know of, whether I'm a big PJ fan or not. But it doesn't touch Last Exit.
