Can you unshine/unpolish an album sound?

I was reading the different threads about Lightning Bolt and while I really enjoy the album, like many of you, I cant stand the shinny production. I know this is entering bootleg territory, but is there a way to "dirt up" the record? I dont know, with a layer of vinyl or something? To make it sound more garagey.

Technically speaking, yes. But it requires a software program called Cedar Tools, which costs several thousand dollars. And then you have to know how to use the program; how to separate the stereo mix into "stems" that make sense; and how to re-mix from these faux stems into something new and cohesive.

A much easier approach to one of my biggest complaints about BS and LB -- that Ed's vox are too loud -- can be fixed with a simple M/S (mid-side) remastering. But "simple" is a relative word -- you need to have the skills to alter his vocal level (which is in the middle of the stereo spread, typically) without negatively impacting the kick, snare, and bass guitar (also in the middle of the spread). Not very easy, really something that only very talented mastering engineers can do effectively.

Several thousand dollars for a new copy of Lightning Bolt...going once....

It's not the same thing, but the brickwall hater mixes are pretty good. S/T seemed to have more space which seemed to help with the shitty mastering.

I really don't have the skill set, stip. I've sat in on some great mastering sessions and had my mind blown, but it's not really in my wheelhouse.
