Absolutely nothing wrong with traditional 1950s old-school Jamaican ska and its contemporary torch-carriers. The mid-to-late 90s ska-punk thing was gross and awful.

Honestly, I'm kind of burned out on defending/defining punk music right now- I never really had to before, even to my snobbiest jazz snob friends (NOT CALLING Y'ALL SNOBS I LOVE YOU GUYS). I'll check out that thread later.stip wrote:platy/harmless: please migrate to this thread and teach me.

I need to listen to more of the real stuff. When I hear 'ska' I think of The Police. The trumpet should never have been let near punk music.theplatypus wrote:Absolutely nothing wrong with traditional 1950s old-school Jamaican ska and its contemporary torch-carriers. MADNESS. I guess Madness were also ska / new wave. And I don't dislike their use of trumpets.

It can get a little repetitive after a few listens, but a lot of that old-school ska is really nice, and has a lot in common with jazz music.

I'd swear that every other band over here is playing a terrible blend of punk, ska & reggae. Their songs are either supposedly funny or supposedly angry. And their name are based on lame puns or something to do with drinking. You can visit me anytime, platy.

I'm not talking about the American stuff which was around for a few years in the 90s.Heathen wrote:man don't get me started on skaharmless wrote:I like examples of all of the off-shoots of Punk:

Honestly, that sounds really awful. If this is the kind of thing you think I'd enjoy, I clearly haven't expressed myself very clearly at all.Heathen wrote:I'd swear that every other band over here is playing a terrible blend of punk, ska & reggae. I'm currently listening to 'Free Nelson Mandela' by The Specials. Fucking awesome.

Probably not the case, but you'll still always be closer to enjoying this than I'll ever be. Like if you're really drunk or something.theplatypus wrote:Honestly, that sounds really awful. I think I've got used to the fact that Matt's drumming is perfectly serviceable, even good, definitely appropriate for 'Mind Your Manners'. But I've only done it by listening to a couple of punk songs by other bands in which the drumming was also fairly average, and deciding that's just punk and it's why I don't really like it.

My pal Chris is a punk aficionado. He says pearl jam don't play punk, they play fast rock songs. He's quite insistent.

I could be down with this but I need to hear more. Maybe we can get back some of the fans we lost if this was better publicised?dimejinky99 wrote:My pal Chris is a punk aficionado. He says pearl jam don't play punk, they play fast rock songs. He's quite insistent.

Re: Let the drummer debate continue!
I think he was trying to make me feel better at my boredom/frustration with Pjs punk efforts. I've no idea if he's right but I guess it makes sense and its a lot more understandable and easier to live with if you just look at them as fast rock songs.

I guess I do. They may or may not be 'punk', but I don't like punk as a genre so as long as they sound good to my ears I don't care what they are.

Can we start a campaign to have Loel Campbell drum for Pearl Jam? He's basically everything I want in a PJ drummer.

Jack.
Don't really like Matt live. He's way too fast and I think Ed's voice suffers for it. It's like listening to PJ on Q102.
