"Unemployable"'s lyrics are indeed stupid, but I like it much better as a piece of music

I don't know how stupid they are. I lost my job just 4 days after I got the album. Felt pretty fucking relatable.

Relatable, sure, but not especially well written, and almost condescendingly caricature-ish in places -- it's like EV is trying to paint-by-numbers his idea of an "average Joe" based on working class stereotypes. Plus a lot of the syntax is really awkward: "a big gold ring what says Jesus saves": "lights a cigarette he's grown to hate" -- just cumbersome phrasing.

Musically it's really solid though. Both it and "Severed Hand" have fallen in my estimation over the years but "Unemployable" had farther to fall so it gets my vote.

S/T is filled with this sort of thing. I think it is probably their weakest albums lyrically.

I think the lyrics to Unemployable are some of the best in the catalog.

There's a lot of clunky lines and straining for a rhyme. I think it's really weak. But I do like the line "I'm scared alive"

guestT wrote:severed hand is everything i hate about most songs where eddie plays electric guitar. you have one of the greatest rhythm guitarists in rock history basically just doubling a part written by a guy who still can't change chords without looking at his fingers. so you end up with two sludgy rhythm parts with mike just aimlessly shredding on top. blah.
You're dead right about the overall sonic effect but Ed's a much better guitarist than you're giving him credit for here.

I would agree. It's certainly the most heavy handed.
