Re: Getaway vs. Lightning Bolt
Getaway has a nice bouncy begining, and a few interesting moments, but never quite gets going. Textbook definition of modern middle of the road.
Lightning Bolt stumbles in its early seconds, but after that it is just a masters class in anthematic song writing. Strong lyrics (bracketing the chorus), excellent momentum, a powerful climax (eddie is so good in that third verse into the outro), a second verse that sounds like vintage REM, an excellent early solo by Mike, and lots of nice spacey accents throughout the song. I've yet to tire of it.

And still better than half the album. Does this remind me of J Geils Band? Or Rick Springfield?stip wrote:Getaway.... Textbook definition of modern middle of the road.
Doesn't matter.

Re: Getaway vs. Lightning Bolt
Lightning Bolt is one of the worst songs this band has produced. At its core is a decent little number. But its attempt for the rafters in the final stretch falls hilariously short, and the entire number is ruined by what is possibly BOB's worst work to date.
At least Getaway has a fun bass line and makes good re-use of the chorus riff from World Wide Suicide.

Re: Getaway vs. Lightning Bolt
I've been a fan of Lightning Bolt (the song) since first listen. It is my favorite song on the album. Getaway is mid tier.

Getaway is actually my fav from LB.
LB got much better in a live setting, but it's feet stay firmly rooted in the ground.

Re: Getaway vs. Lightning Bolt
I actually enjoy both songs, they're amongst the best from LB (definetely better than the other 2 songs in this round).
Lighning Bolt gets my vote, I've never really understood the hatred for that one.

Re: Getaway vs. Lightning Bolt
I'm hot and cold on "LB" -- live, when it's supported by stronger songs than it is on the album, it kind of blends into the flow of the set and coasts on the general energy of the performance. I find myself enjoying it in that context more than I do on the album. But in any case it gets an easy vote over "Getaway," which is absolute bottom-tier PJ for me -- a smug, self-satisfied soapbox monologue in which a fifty year-old man discovers that he's capable of formulating his own free thought, all to a tune that reminds me of Aerosmith's "Falling In Love (Is Hard on the Knees)" ("We was making love when you told me that you love me"/"Everyone's a critic looking back up the river"), a song I'd also vote for over "Getaway."
