Re: Tom Waits
Finally got the chance to start listening to the mix KD posted.
This run:
7. WITH A SUITCASE ("Paradise Alley" sessions, unreleased)
8. MEET ME IN PARADISE ALLEY ("Paradise Alley" soundtrack)
9. ANNIE'S BACK IN TOWN ("Paradise Alley" soundtrack)
10. WHISTLIN' PAST THE GRAVEYARD (alternate version, from "Bounced Checks" compilation album)
11. JERSEY GIRL (alternate version, from "Bounced Checks" compilation album)
Made me want to cry and scream and jump and sing and die all at the same time. Fucking OUTSTANDING run. I'm only 15 song in so far and I love the whole thing. Can't wait to listen to more!

I love "Blue Skies"... totally different kind of song for him

Me too -- and I like this heavily orchestrated version a lot better than the sparse demo on the "Early Years" comp.theplatypus wrote:I love "Blue Skies"... totally different kind of song for him

Re: Tom Waits
Yeah it's very Bacharach-y
(I don't know that I've ever heard the Early Years version)

Re: Tom Waits
Certainly pleasant enough, but I think it is served especially well by the orchestration -- the song really calls for it. It has echoes of Bacharach, as you say, but also of classic schlock country ballads.

Downloading tonight but I won't be able to start listening until tomorrow. can't wait - a ton of songs on here I don't know.
I love Corrine died on the battlefield, though. I had it as the closing track on my last RM secret mix.

Re: Tom Waits
Having some general sense of your Waits preferences I think you'll enjoy the second disc more, Stip -- though some of my favorite early Waits tunes are on CD1 (the "Paradise Alley" stuff specifically).
