Source?
Mark Pellington interview in the recent 3 part Celebration Rock podcast about Pearl Jam. They interview Mark in the last 30 (or so) minutes of part one. In that he calls SVT a making of Yield doc. I just listened to it. Was listening as I pasted in fact.
Was that before or after the massive yawn?

:haha:

Which yawn? There's like ten of them. To be fair though, I think half are inhalations from bong hits.

I'm fairly certain that it was recorded in November for the rehearsals for the Stones show and not during any recording of the album. I can't see those guys letting a camera crew in to a recording session.

I should watch this again though. I think I've only ever seen it once.

It's certainly presented that way -- the film even carries the subtitle "The Yield sessions" -- but again, it was recorded after Yield was already completed, and shows no recording or songwriting. The band does discuss how they made Yield in the interview segments, but we never actually see it. It's essentially a Yield EPK, really.

I have no idea. Just happened upon this discussion as I was listening and thought I'd post what he said. I have no real knowledge.

But to me, it always felt like a pre-album doc or "making of" doc just because of how much stuff there is about songwriting. Like the Stone/Ed fight about the ebow. And the stuff with Stone playing the In Hiding riff over ans ovet in hopes that Ed will like it and put lyrics to it.

There's a lot of stuff in there that makes it seem like the album hasn't been recorded/finished yet and stuff is still in process. But again I really don't know.

The ebow stuff isn't about songwriting, it's "who's gonna play this part?". More like working out a live band arrangement.

The stuff about "In Hiding" is presented as an anecdote, not something we actually see play out.

Maybe they were being sneaky about it because "watch us rehearse for a supporting gig" is a less attractive premise than "watch us write/record an album"

It's been a long time since I've watched it. I'm sure you're right. But that isn't my memory of it. I remember seeing Stone play it (the riff). I remember Ed saying something about giving him time to figure it out. I remember shots of him writing.

And the ebow stuff, I remember talk about trying to find the right sound, not just who will play it. But again, it's been years since I waterbed watched it. I'm sure I'm misremembering.

I'm fairly certain that the SVT performances are later rehearsals and not actual recording sessions, though the recording quality/sound mix is quite good.

This is what I remember too, Joey. That being said, I have no concrete reason to believe Jorge and others here aren't correct. But that e-bow stuff, and Stone's question "do you know where he wants it?" definitely spark some questions about the time frame of the video. Why would there be so much confusion about where Ed wants the e-bow if it had already been recorded? Why would Ed make the comment about it being "the sound" the song calls for (seemingly attempting to convince the other band members of this) if it had already been recorded?

 I'm not saying they are convincing or definitive arguments that prove that the album hadn't been completed, but they certainly raise that question.

Watching creativity in the studio is one of the most interesting and insightful and enjoyable things about music (for me). It is the perfect way to experience an album. SVT captures the Yield sessions in such a cool and artistic way. It's just beautiful and I love it.
What are some other great fly-on-the-wall studio docs? Wilco's I Am Trying To Break Your Heart is pretty good, though it came out after that parts were edited to position Jay as the bad guy and Jeff as the victim.
Radiohead - "Live from the Basement" is in this vein, though (again) not an actual album recording session.

Because they are working out live arrangements of songs that had been recorded months previous.

Besides, I would imagine that if they were making a documentary about the making of an album, we would see them performing an actual album take in the film somewhere.

Yeah, that makes sense. And like I said, I have no real reason to believe the film isn't a rehearsal session. There just seem to be a few conversations that hint otherwise. I always assumed it possible that there were some (maybe just a few) pieces that were recorded throughout the entire Yield sessions and that footage was sprinkled throughout the film. Not to say that this is a specific instance of that.

There's almost no doubt this is post recording.

The only sliver of doubt is what PHATJ said about the e-bow argument. If this is COMPLETELY post-recording, why would Ed say, "Do you wanna try an e-bow there?" And why would Stone be so confused about where it's supposed to come?
