Oh my God, can you just tell the story and not get lost in tangents. This story about a man and his shit is going on forever! I feel so lost and according to the player I have an hour and fifteen minutes to go, and this is on 2x speed.

Wallace went through some shit (no pun intended...okay, maybe a little) with 9/11, and that story is one of the few cracks he took at it when it came to fiction (maybe the only one, even)--maybe reading it with that in mind will help? I've read it with students a lot and there's a good amount to talk about, but I do think it's a bit overlong.

It's great so far. The author was on NPR a while back, and she blew me away. I took enough Animal Behavior courses in college to be into this stuff, and our cat has become our child, in the absence of a real one. So I am having fun learning about how to give him the best domestic life he can have. And hopefully we'll get him trained well enough that he can go outside in a highly predatory environment, and come back when we call him. He already knows "Wally, come!" and "Wally, sit," which is more than any cat I've ever met.

Excellent. My Dad claims he trained his cat when he was younger. I was always skeptical of that story. But now you've got me thinking I'm an asshole for ever doubting him.

I really liked "Good Old Neon" and "Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature" with it's talk of black widows, made me think of a Chuck Palahniuk story though I can't remember which one.

"Oblivion" was also a little overlong, to the point where I started to care less about the characters the more I kept going. And then the ending out of nowhere...it's almost enough to make you want to read it again because it's obviously a dream the whole way and yet nothing is obvious with DFW.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Finished Oblivion and started A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again...again. I got lost the first time I tried reading it and it's actually easier to read now.

Has anyone else had Goodreads been asking you about books you've read? I'm consistently anal-retentive about my start and end dates for books but lately it keeps asking me, "Did you read this book this year?" for books that I read in years previous. And when I check, sure enough there's no "Date Finished" in there.

I finally finished a bunch of Star Wars books that I've been holding for months, now to move on to some books my bro-in-law got me for Christmas. This way he can stop asking me if I've started reading them yet! lol

I used to be super into Goodreads; like, I'd keep it updated with what page I was on in each book at the end of the day. But then I realized I could read another ten pages if I quit with that stuff, so I got much lazier.

I only truly care about start and stop dates. If a book is particularly good (or bad...lately it's been bad) I'll keep everyone* updated on my progress but otherwise it's just "I'm reading this, and now I'm done."

*Not that everyone cares but hey that's what social media is for, right? Shout your voice as loud as possible and see who listens?

Yeah, I always have to check and make sure it saves my dates. Sometimes it does, sometimes not. I can't figure out why it doesn't always do what I want. Maybe it's a mobile thing. Maybe it has to do with the pop-up that only sometimes launches and whether I x out of that or hit save. Maybe it's if I add it to my read shelf before I rate it. I just always check.
And I never update on what page I'm at. That feels like an invasion of privacy for some reason.
