For the record, I'm not suggesting the whole song is a Beatles rip-off, just the guitar riff.

I don't hear it, but I ultimately don't care if songs are rip-offs of other songs. I'm a Dylan fan and a jazz fan and a rap fan -- that sort of linear recycling of previously conceived musical elements is such a huge part of so much music I listen to that I couldn't afford to be bothered by it.

My threshold for what constitutes a musical "rip off" is very high; anything short of outright plagiarism doesn't really make the grade.

I feel like I'm getting maligned for not respecting Tremor Christ or something. I fucking love that song! I'm just always surprised when people hold it up as a high creative benchmark, when I believe it to be a pretty elementary, off-the-cuff song that wears its inspirations on its sleeve.

"Ripoff" has been a recurring discussion topic on RM over the years -- "Given to Fly" is a "ripoff" of "Going to California," "Severed Hand" is a ripoff of "Porch," etc. It's just not an avenue of criticism that interests me; it almost always feels like a stretch, and rarely impacts how the song ultimately registers with me.
