Re: Back Bolt
"Olé" doesn't really fit with the albums sonically. It's much dirtier than anything on either album

Re: Back Bolt
I just listened to SOH, then I decided to give my "Back Bolt" a listen. I still don't know the order, so I tried random and see what does / doesn't gel.
So first song played was "Gonna See My Friend" and the sound between Binaural and BS is jarring (shocker I know). I'm no audiophile, I'm listening to the songs via my computer with JBL speakers. Binaural / SOH was engrossing. BS is literally hurting my ears. Got Some is now playing and I think I may be having a seizure. I was gonna try and listen to this album today, but I don't know if I can take it. I need that Binaural vibe.

Re: Back Bolt
I still find these "The production literally hurts my ears!" comments to be bizarre. The album sounds like shit, no doubt, but outside of turning something up to loud, no music has ever actually "hurt my ears."

Man, after SOH, it was just so jarring, and it was the sound. I checked Sometimes > Hail Hail and didn't get that sensation. The music in BS was just so abrasive. I didn't adjust the volume or anything. Just went straight to GSMF from SOH. The sound took me out of it. It was too loud and sounded artificial (logic pro / mastering / production / loudness wars / ????). Binaural didn't sound that way at all. There was tension, atmosphere, space. I didn't feel any of that kinda of stuff with BS / LB. The third song played was Pendulum and it was an attempt to maybe harken that Binaural vibe, but it also suffered from that "artificial" sound.LoathedVermin72 wrote:I still find these "The production literally hurts my ears!" comments to be bizarre. I picture him storing up and tending to his animated gifs. A silo ready and waiting to be employed upon THE RETURN OF CRACKPOT.E.H. Ruddock wrote:you see, Sarge was an animated gif master...

Of course. But that still wouldn't make my ears hurt.darth_vedder wrote:Man, after SOH, it was just so jarring, and it was the sound. I checked Sometimes > Hail Hail and didn't get that sensation. Coincidentally, "Ear Fatigue" is the title of my memoir of The Loudness Wars. Sub-title is "How a Saint Named Anger Led to a Brickwalled Avocado."tragabigzanda wrote:Ear fatigue is a real thing, and music with small dynamic range is known to instigate it faster than music with broad dynamic range.darth_vedder wrote:Man, after SOH, it was just so jarring, and it was the sound. Re: Back Bolt
Weirdly, "Pendulum" has one of the few true "hard on the ears" moments in the catalog for me -- that "long time agooooo" line, that flange effect is like nails on a chalkboard to me.

There's a bit of microphone distortion in there too from memory.Kevin Davis wrote:Weirdly, "Pendulum" has one of the few true "hard on the ears" moments in the catalog for me -- that "long time agooooo" line, that flange effect is like nails on a chalkboard to me.

Re: Back Bolt
the only moment in the catalog for me is the sometimes/hail hail transition. Otherwise I level out to wherever the album is. random across the catalog can be jarring at times, though

Yeah I like that part too, for some reason.LoathedVermin72 wrote:That moment is the only good thing about LB's production.Kevin Davis wrote:Weirdly, "Pendulum" has one of the few true "hard on the ears" moments in the catalog for me -- that "long time agooooo" line, that flange effect is like nails on a chalkboard to me.
But now that I know LV does too, I might change my mind. Hmm.

I get what you're saying. I kinda love that transition though. Same with Nothingman > Whippingstip wrote:the only moment in the catalog for me is the sometimes/hail hail transition. Otherwise I level out to wherever the album is. random across the catalog can be jarring at times, though
