Shit Town was pretty great. I have my issues with it, for sure. But overall, I really enjoyed it.

I drove right past that exit on I-20 recently. If this podcast had come out two weeks earlier I could have fulfilled a nerdy dream of visiting a place on a map that I learned about on a podcast or true crime documentary.

Yeah, I enjoyed it overall, but after Chapter IV I thought it was incredible and it kind of petered out a little.

I agree for the most part. There is some fantastic stuff in the final chapter. But I was a bit bummed out by what was left fully unexplored after Chapter IV. There was a lot of color but too many red herrings. I wanted more. But, just looking at what the thing was, what it ended up being and being about, I give it a solid A.

Simple Torture wrote:Unrelated to any specific podcast: the latest update to iTunes has changed the order of the options when you right-click on a podcast feed, and it's fucking maddening. So where it would usually say "Mark All As Played," it now says, "Download." So today I accidentally downloaded every episode of every podcast on my feed...twice.
Update: this just happened again.

I think I share most people's sentiments about the course of S-Town: episode 4 was where it reached its high point after chugging along at a breakneck pace, then 5-6 were not as jam-packed with great material. Episode 7 served as a nice little epilogue, almost, since there wasn't much new happening in the "now" of the story. Still a great little limited series.

Totally agree.

Chapter I: B+ (nice intro, very different, never formulaic)
Chapter II: A+ (holy shit!)
Chapter III: B (some wheel spinning but great characters)
Chapter IV: A+ (holy goddamn shit! pinnacle of the series)
Chapter V: B (oh, interesting step back... where is this going, what are we building to)
Chapter VI: B- (great background but a little unnecessary)
Chapter VII: B+ (good finale, but too many things were left on the table, it was ultimately strange --- and maybe unfocused?)

Those phone calls that he had to make in episode four were just crushing. P.S. I want a hypeman who has a bullet in his brain who just says, "Yup! Yup!" to every statement I make.

I wasn't unhappy with the content after chapter IV, it was interesting and thought provoking, it's just don't get me all jazzed up for something if the pod is going to go in an entirely different direction.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

The episode in the TAL feed from this week was a rebroadcast of a show from 15 years ago, and it features a lot of the producers in it. That includes a whole lot of Gimlet people, which is kind of cool. Alex Blumberg, Starlee Kine, Jonathan Goldstein. Just kind of cool
