I knew Verm was going to be interested. I could tell right away. As soon as I finished watching it I thought, "man those visuals are so... off and obvious; it looks like a Transformers movie -- LV's gonna love this!"

I don't think the visuals look like anything special. But I am glad it has a "look," at least.

You think? Man, when I read that book, everything seemed so vibrant in my mind's eye; and then the Tim Curry version just looked so flat and lifeless. Really happy they're taking a big swing for the visuals on this.

I'm not really talking about how vibrant the colors are.

It's the "look" that made me think you were going to be more interested in this trailer than I was. Doesn't mean the movie will be good or bad or that either of us will like it or whatever. I just think I'm starting to get a better sense of the kinds of "looks" or aesthetics that speak to you.

What then? Set design/blocking stuff? Character design?
I liked the look of the kids. Some of the other stuff, like the creepy looking house, was definitely "obvious" and "off," in the sense that a house like that wouldn't really exist in that sort of neighborhood. But again, I'm mostly turned off by horror films because they're either A) too grotesque (Eli Roth, etc), B) too reliant on jump scares and NIN video effects (The Ring, for instance). So I'm excited for a horror film that looks creepy and colorful and make-believe.

The kids are fine. They don't look at all how I imagined them while reading but who cares? That has nothing to do with it. It's the shot choices. It's the lens choices. It's the focal points and timing. The whole thing feels by the numbers. Oh here's the close-up of the boat and the blurry kid in the background. Oh here's the overhead shot of rain. Oh here's the shot in the sewer that's iconic because we've already seen it in a different movie about this same thing. Oh here's the inexplicable technology gone awry bit. Oh here's the over-the-top dilapidated and creepy house that looks like ever other overly dilapidated and creepy house you've ever seen in any horror movie ever.

The movie may be great. But this trailer was so uninteresting and obvious. Everything about it was out of another film. It had no energy. It felt tired and shopworn. There was nothing to engage with, for me. The "make-believe" ness of the thing also turned me off. To me, IT is only scary if it's real and believable. The idea that this could happen -- in fact DOES or HAS happened in any small town -- that's what makes this thing terrifying. The more broad and absurd it gets, the further from the heart of the fear of Pennywise we get. That's not as interesting to me personally. But, like I said, it's just one trailer. The movie may be awesome. I'm still interested in seeing it but now I'm less optimistic than I was before.

Yeah, guys, it seems pretty clear that DC/WB is trying to move away from what they originally had planned and are moving in a different direction with their Expanded Cinematic Universe. I mean, Joss Whedon? And they're courting Aaron Sorkin to write something for them? This is a completely different DCEU than what they were planning before B v S.
