I think that's an unfair responsibility and expectation to put on the band and I think you're only setting yourself up for disappointment and one you'll blame the band on.Strat wrote:It is time for PJ to create something that once again establishes them as something greater than just a rock band.

That's the vibrato/resonance I was talking about. I don't think I've ever heard him use that effect before. Some people are mistaking it for auto-tune or a chorus effect, but I think he's doing it with his actual voice. He must be taking lessons.dimejinky99 wrote:Two things, no three, Things i'm really loving about this song.
1. Eds delivery of the patience lines. He's back and it sounds incredible.

Whatever it is, chorus, bridge, I agree. It also has hints of The Fixer bridge to me, but that might be because of the harmonising going on in the vocals -- which I like, essentlally.McParadigm wrote:I like the verses more than the chorus. The chorus has the same simple "I want to be in your brain" type pop ambitions of something like Marker. It's cool, but by the fourth time you've heard it...you've heard it, you know?
McParadigm wrote:The verses offroad like mad, though, precariously balancing punk push with circular groove in a way that lets Ed twitch and swagger his way around that throwback vocal echo. I still like the bass breaking away from the song in the "Mind your manners" part, and the Bad Religionesque crowd call stuff.
In recent years they haven't been great at choruses. I think we can finally put that one down as a certainty.

Cool read Jorge. You had me until 'no codes hideous artwork'.theplatypus wrote:Alright, guys, here it is. My review of "Mind Your Manners", for those who were asking about it.
It takes the song as a starting point for a longer analysis of the band's career as a whole. It doesn't look like many of you will agree with me.
Shut your whore mouth! Thats their best album artwork everrrrrr!! fact!!

Well they just aren't in that game anymore I don't think?
PJ20 seemed to be more about confirming in the worlds eyes that PJ were now elevated to icon status and 'one of the greats' and it was pitched at joe public more than it ever was to the hardcore.
Are you saying you want them to become important again? Cos it's clear they already think they are and don't need to reaffirm that for themselves or the world at large.
That's why something like MYM rings a little self indulgently, as in let's please ourselves with this one, instead of trying to grab everyone's attention with the whole 'we're back!' Thing a la ST.
that make sense?

Personally I think 'more than a rock band' is a subjective call and not really for Joe Public to decide... so maybe that was more what was meant?dimejinky99 wrote:Strat wrote:dimejinky99 wrote:I think that's an unfair responsibility and expectation to put on the band and I think you're only setting yourself up for disappointment and one you'll blame the band on.Strat wrote:It is time for PJ to create something that once again establishes them as something greater than just a rock band.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I didn't mean for it to turn out that long and rambling. I also did no real proofreading, so it gets sloppy at times.given2trade wrote:Great job Jorge. Absolutely, I agree. In Motörhead's case, they've been very clear about the fact that they're a punk band that got grouped in with metal bands due to the way they looked and dressed, and their music is clearly indicative of that. I mean, they even wrote a song about how much they love the Ramones.harmless wrote:It's funny, punk / hardcore and metal / thrash seem to be two styles, as far as I can see, whose fans want desperately to be mutually exclusive. I don't like *that*, I like *that*, get it right. But so often the bands aren't that precious about it.

has nothing to do with the public perception. i dont care how big or small pearl jam is. Point was - They wrote music that set them apart from your standard hard rock band. Songs that made them GREAT. The last two records, while full of good songs, fall very short of propelling them into greatness or ....amazing.harmless wrote:Personally I think 'more than a rock band' is a subjective call and not really for Joe Public to decide... so maybe that was more what was meant?dimejinky99 wrote:Strat wrote:dimejinky99 wrote:I think that's an unfair responsibility and expectation to put on the band and I think you're only setting yourself up for disappointment and one you'll blame the band on.Strat wrote:It is time for PJ to create something that once again establishes them as something greater than just a rock band.

But see that right there is the definition of subjectivity. One mans meat n all that. I thought a lot of the last one had amazing songs.

Apparently in RM land everything that isn't classical or jazz is punk. Ace of Spades owes more to the blues than to anything resembling punk.theplatypus wrote:Why does it make you laugh? Q: Your first album came out in 1977 in the middle of the punk explosion. What did you consider Motorhead, since they obviously weren't punk?
Lemmy: Were not really metal either & were a rock and roll band. After 25 years we should just be called Motorhead Music.
While a Western guitar motif lost on the swings drum bass fusion, get your own thoughts into the subconscious often forgotten. "Pendulum" is a sweeping soul from the ballast.

I've said before I don't know much about punk but the only part of the song that reminds me of it are some of the vocal choices and layering's.Blenheim Augustine wrote:Apparently in RM land everything that isn't classical or jazz is punk. Everyone, stop spouting anal bullshit.
I love you all, but the song is heavily influenced by punk as well as 80s thrash heavy metal. So either of those names for it is appropriate. People calling it either, or just 'a fast rock song', are all correct. I won't let any punk fans tell me it isn't punk; my fuckin' ears will decide what I think.

Re: Mind Your Manners
Of course it does, because it's also contemporary with the late-70s punk explosion. Why would it be indebted to it? Most all of rock music is, to a large degree, blues-based. This includes the offshoots, like punk rock. The first Stooges album is amped-up, stripped-down blues, just like Sham 69 is, just like The Cramps were, just like Johnny Thunders. Shit, you can hear those same influences seep through even the most exacerbated and over-the-top of the early punk bands, like Black Flag. One of punk's biggest influences is The MC5, and you can hear that blues base all over Wayne Kramer's guitar. Motörhead shares a lot of those same attributes, and the stylistic resemblance is clear as day-- the absurd tempos, the power chords the angular energy. It's all right there.Blenheim Augustine wrote:Apparently in RM land everything that isn't classical or jazz is punk. Ace of Spades owes more to the blues than to anything resembling punk.

The Ramones were even one of Lemmy's favorite bands:
"We sounded like punk but looked like metal. I always felt we were more punk than metal anyway. I call it rock 'n' roll, but if I had to go down one side or the other I'd say we had more in common with punk than we have in common with heavy metal."- Lemmy
