I'm sorry the band is so disappointing to you these days, trags. That sucks.

I certainly didn't hear ramones when I first heard this song. A faster 'punkish' style, but it hardly makes sense to reduce that entire genre to the ramonestragabigzanda wrote:They've totally and for other artists sounds before! I listened, and it was exactly as I expected. Boring/bland/uninteresting/uninspired.

that's fine. Pearl Jam has had more than a few one off songs that didn't grab me eithertragabigzanda wrote:Maybe I'm just holding on to my younger vision of the band as being doomy and introspective, and I'm not connecting as well at watching them play upbeat music that makes them happy. It's a curious tipping point, especially after things like this:tragabigzanda wrote:Maybe I'm just holding on to my younger vision of the band as being doomy and introspective, and I'm not connecting as well at watching them play upbeat music that makes them happy. Re: Pearl Jam covers Brandi Carlile
yeah, but the song doesn't strike me a ramones knock off. I think Joey's point is spot on. This isn't different to me then what was no doubt a conscious decision to write songs that sound like Neil Young during No Code.tragabigzanda wrote:You did see the quote from Mike, right?stip wrote:I certainly didn't hear ramones when I first heard this song. And it's not like this was a punk/ramonesque cover of a punk/ramoneseque song

you know, block the video and the crowd noise and it's a very good version of the fixer. A little less shiny than the already excellent studio versionBirds in Hell wrote:It's a curious tipping point, especially after things like this:tragabigzanda wrote:Maybe I'm just holding on to my younger vision of the band as being doomy and introspective, and I'm not connecting as well at watching them play upbeat music that makes them happy. I like the song too!
But the whole Target commercial is a galling aesthetic contrast to the moody 90s band trag taked about.

I mean, from an inspirational standpoint this is a million times less egregious than the Leaving Here cover. I love it, but it's just pearl jam trying to sound exactly like the who (see also, Love Reign O'er Me, also awesome)

Look, I think we can all agree that, whatever merits this cover does or doesn't have, that this is a completely silly place to draw a line in the sand

Obviously, I'm not trying to tell people how to feel. But this one feels like an odd example to pull out and have this argument about. But whatever.

Re: Pearl Jam covers Brandi Carlile
And that's why you don't like it, but my point was that the starting point of 'lets make this sound like the ramones' or whatever mike said isn't your problemtragabigzanda wrote:stip wrote:And it's not like this was a punk/ramonesque cover of a punk/ramoneseque songThe Leaving Here cover is, to me, a perfect example of them allowing the performances, production, and mixing enough leeway for their distinct musical personalities to leak their way into the track.stip wrote:I mean, from an inspirational standpoint this is a million times less egregious than the Leaving Here cover. Love Reign O'er Me is completely their own only because of Ed's amazing delivery at the (Billboard?) awards show.
There's nothing about the Carlile cover that connects my ears to Stone Gossard or Mike McCready playing those guitars; it could literally be anybody on those guitars. And then Matt and Jeff just sound bored to me, even if their signature sound is somewhat recognizable.
