They've totally and for other artists sounds before! Neil young, Pink Floyd, etc. but their aim was never so unwavering and precise to the extent that their idiosyncrasies and unique personalities were completely stifled. But this attempt at a Ramones song sounds nothing to me like the band I fell in love with; it sounds like a bunch of studio musicians who never met before, with an aging eddie vender on the mic. And in this instance, eddies the best part about it

I certainly didn't hear ramones when I first heard this song. A faster 'punkish' style, but it hardly makes sense to reduce that entire genre to the ramones

You did see the quote from Mike, right?

yeah, but the song doesn't strike me a ramones knock off. I think Joey's point is spot on. This isn't different to me then what was no doubt a conscious decision to write songs that sound like Neil Young during No Code.

And it's not like this was a punk/ramonesque cover of a punk/ramoneseque song

The Leaving Here cover is, to me, a perfect example of them allowing the performances, production, and mixing enough leeway for their distinct musical personalities to leak their way into the track.

Love Reign O'er Me is completely their own only because of Ed's amazing delivery at the (Billboard?) awards show.

There's nothing about the Carlile cover that connects my ears to Stone Gossard or Mike McCready playing those guitars; it could literally be anybody on those guitars. And then Matt and Jeff just sound bored to me, even if their signature sound is somewhat recognizable.

And that's why you don't like it, but my point was that the starting point of 'lets make this sound like the ramones' or whatever mike said isn't your problem
