Dave Abbruzzese's time in Pearl Jam is very likely the most significant achievement in his professional life, I have to imagine he's spent a lot of time over the last few decades thinking about how differently his life might have worked out had he stayed in the band.

The induction seemed like an opportunity to finally put those issues to rest to some extent and I can understand his disappointment and frustration if there was no effort made to reach out to him personally or get him to the ceremony. It just seems unkind.

But these assumptions against Eddie/ Pearl Jam are just ridiculous.

Ed has said nice things to Dave a over the past year most recently last night. They invited the drummers (Dave is the only to not take that as an invite) and he puts up a stink. Maybe Dave a is the brat here. Why is the assumption ed is the continuing asshole ? Nobody knows.

strat, every successful band, even pearl jam, leaves a trail of carnage along the way - that's the price of success - and they clearly view dave a. as part of that and nothing more. jorge nailed it that the open letter to past members wasn't much of a gesture at all, just a well executed PR tactic to make it look like the band was taking the high road. if anyone actually thinks that was pearl jam genuinely working to have dave a. present last night, then they're fanboy suckers.

And re: the "open invitation" - Matt Chamberlain and Jack Irons both have active professional musical careers, are still regularly in touch with the guys in the band, and it's probably within their means to get to NYC to attend the ceremony if they want. We're not really comparing apples with apples here.

haha, dave a. is probably incarcerated for another bunk possession charge at the moment, so this is all moot.

This convo - lol.

I can assure you Dave A has spent much of the last 20 years thinking about Pearl Jam and what could have been. He is very angry. This isn't like a guy getting dumped not moving on. You can't just get hired by a band and make 10s of millions in the process. That's how much he lost out on...10s of millions. So not only did he lose the fame, he lost the ability to get stinking rich. He probably barely gets by right now financially.

And the band doesn't like him. That's why they fired him.

So why is it so complicated to understand that Dave A. will indefinitely be angry and the band will indefinitely not give a shit?

because some folks just can't reconcile that a dude whose lyrics have meant so much to them over their lives is also a petulant rock star who fired his drummer for dropping his favorite guitar.

Again, how do you know? Was it an actual invite? In that public statement they basically said "yeah he can come", but what does that entail? Come join me on this trip to Speculationtown: I get the impression that Dave A. is very much a "working musician", and those HOF seats are pricey; maybe he just couldn't afford it. Did the band offer to pay for his attendance? It feels like they're in a position where they could easily put him up if they really wanted him to be there. OK, another theory: maybe money's not the issue, but Dave A. just wasn't invited to perform with the band on stage. Wouldn't it feel a little weird to be sitting as, essentially, an audience member while your former band-- the band that fired you-- is getting inducted, and you don't even get to perform with them afterwards? One more: maybe Dave's beef isn't with the band, but with the HOF for not inducting him. His last Facebook post talks about how his daughter "wishes they'd changed their mind", but it's not clear whether he's talking about the band or the HOF as an organization. Maybe he used to be under the impression that the band was able to convince them to induct him, and then when it was proven that they weren't, Dave's frustration shifted to the HOF. I dunno man! So many possible scenarios here, and we don't really know anything. The band may or may not be at fault. But just like we shouldn't assume Ed is the asshole, doesn't it feel kind of fucked up to hear people say "fuck Dave A! What a brat! What a whiny pissbaby!" when we haven't even heard his side of it? *SHRUG*
