I really don't care about all the hoopla surrounding Dave A. or the band's personal life. I was making a joke about Satan's Bed. A little late, admittedly. Dave has been acting like a Drama Queen over it all, though. Five Against 1 is a great read that goes into great detail about it all. I highly recommend it. I still love the music and the shows. And I like Boom and Ed's gonna be Ed. I wouldn't want it any other way. I took ALL my heroes off their pedestals a while back. They're just people and people are flawed. PJ has been and will still be my favorite band until I'm too old to care or in my grave.

I was really happy that Ed mentioned that they still enjoy writing together. That bodes well for future records. I like the Brandi Carlisle cover, too.

Hell, at this point I'm gonna go out and say it, I prefer Matt Cameron on Alive (it might have a lot to do with last nights version coming to that weird short ending which I'm sure had to do with time constraints) but Dave K did a few odd fills that I'm just not used to hearing in the song either.

With Dave after all these years we really don't have much to go on as to what went down. There's Dave's side of the story which we've heard, but we've heard little from the band aside what was in the PJ20 book and some errant comments. Just that he didn't fit in. My sense is it's fairly typical dynamics that happen to many bands. One band member was going through an especially hard time with something. Whether or not you agree with how he's handling it or not, he's your bandmate, you're on his team. You've gotta make sure he's alright, or there is no band to play for. More importantly than that, he's the star so he holds the cards. Your the drummer that they hired cause they were desperate to get the Ten touring plans going. Somehow the band took off, but you gotta recognize your 1 of 5 people and that they gotta be getting along with you. I dunno, at the end of the day, it's just relationships, I think the fan viewpoint is just one very skewed version of what probably really went down. I hope someone in the band writes a book and we learn more about all of this.

No, it's out there. Dave A. accidentally damaged one of.Ed's guitars, then Ed had Stone fire him.

I think the guitar breaking story was just a tidbit symbolizing their relationship at that point. I mean, based on what we do know, I feel like I understand. ONe band member, the most important band member, is basically having a mental breakdown. Another one is flying off the handle with alcohol and drug issues. And the 2 founding members are just confused and shell-shocked by everything. You either help keep the band together or you may be part of the problem. In that situation, if you're mouthing off about hating the Ticketmaster thing or the new songs or whatever that certainly is your right, but the band needs help and you're just making things worse. With this going on, the other "rock icon" kills himself and your star band member freaks out even more. I guess it must have been an untenable situation at the time.

Eh, I'm glad they made it to this point. I hope they just spend any scheduled time together now collaborating on tunes.

According to the book, the final straw came as a result of a Drummer Magazine article. Ed had initiated a press blackout and Dave already had the interview scheduled and refused to cancel. He was warned by Kelly Curtis and a couple of other people. He said screw it and gave examples of Mike, Jeff and Stone doing Guitar World features. I chalk it up to them just being fundamentally different people and Ed clashed with him, in particular. Him breaking the guitar was like a metaphor for their relationship. Awkward. Ed pretty much pulled rank and made Stone do it, though. He found many, many ways to avoid Dave. This comes from the chapter "Blues For Breakfast" in Five Against 1.

The band has never been one of those bands like U2 or Green Day, where it's the same dudes from the very beginning. That's something special this particular band has never had, and really very few can ever maintain. That ended once Krusen left. Dave A basically arrived from industry contacts, while Jack and Matt have genuine connections but came later.

Krusen was the one jamming on Mookie Blaylock songs and resurrected the 'same 5 guys against the world' mentality they never really had. Pretty amazing to see it come back from the dead. I'll probably watch this performance alot.

Meanwhile Jack Irons introduced Eddie to the band. So it's not like Jack or Matt doesn't have the history with the band.

Dave A was with the band for exactly three years. August 1991 to august 1994. He toured on two albums (Ten and VS) and played on two albums (VS and Vitalogy). He should have been there at the hall of fame show. Still, it's been 23 years. Time to move on.

I know both Friel and Matt spent quite a bit of time with the band before Dave K joined. Dave K was only in the band from about the 15th of October 1990 until May 1991. He obviously played on Ten, but I don't feel like it's fully correct to say that he must be there for the origins of Pearl Jam to be fully represented. Great to see him play with the band on Friday though.
