However, I think we do need to credit that even if their current singer is a karaoke knock off, it is an amazing piece of karaoke work. If you weren't looking you'd never know it wasn't steve perry
I understand he's a good facsimile of "The Legend" (© me) Steve Perry, but karaoke is karaoke is karaoke. And, maybe I'm deaf, but the karaoke didn't sound all that good to my ears that night.

I thought he sounded great. But I couldn't watch him perform. If I looked at him I was totally taken out of it. He was super awkward on stage. He was trying to fabricate some kind of presence and charisma that he didn't naturally posses. The band sounded good. He sounded exactly like Steve Perry. But I felt uncomfortable watching him try to prance around the stage and toss the mic from hand to hand. I mean, good on him for landing the gig. But it was a weird show. And my section totally felt it.

I found it surreal and ironic that my parents' favorite band and my favorite band both went into the HOF on the same night.

Journey definitely had the second biggest following there that night. But there was a bit of fatigue in their fan base during the speeches and induction part. That was definitely not something I felt from the people around me when it was Pearl Jam's turn.

I consider Journey the same way I feel about Bon Jovi. Their hit songs are undeniable, just really really good and memorable songs, like 4 or 5. That's a handful of songs. But spend an hour with them? 2 hours? It becomes blatantly clear what the criticism of those bands is all about, and it's all very true.

What was the general feeling amongst the non-PJ die-hards? Were they impressed with the band and fans? Indifferent? Was there an "okay, I think I get it, wow" vibe? Did it really become a mini-PJ concert w/ an observant crowd of non-fans joining in?

Im so in love with Joey and evenslow right now its sickening. but im more in love with pearl jam.

God bless you two. What wonderful posts and im so glad you both got to experience that. its also very refreshing to hear such wonderful and thoughtful comments regarding what the band really is as opposed to the standard mockery that RM is so famous for.

This is why I come back to the board once in awhile. Once the cynicism and snark and unrelenting negativity comes back, I'm gone. But there are some intelligent and analytical people here that can really process and explain some good thoughts that I can't find anywhere else. I don't need a sheep-like love fest, but just some serious level of exchange like what's going on here, and a desire to reflect.

For those of us that are still fans of this band, the whole "it feels weird to call it pride, but thats what it is" really nails it for me.

This has been a ride I've been on since I was 16. I've changed alot since then, but I really want to keep engaged with the band on some level. If I ever become a cynical prick, I'll consider it more my fault then theirs. I've certainly become at risk at various times in my life of being a cynical prick, but the band's music and my connection to it helps me come back to something more earnest and innocent. I personally don't want to lose that.

I refuse to become cynical with most things in my life.

Most everyone in and around me was there for Pearl Jam. There were a few casual fans or maybe people that weren't very familiar but they were few. Those people had grins a mile wide though once Pearl Jam started playing. No one in my section left early. They all stayed until the announcer dismissed us. We were all secretly hoping there would be some kind of encore. An announcement was made telling us the ceremony and show were over and it was time to get out.

Pearl Jam was also the only act that people stood for the entire time. I can't speak for everyone but in my section people stood through Letterman's speech, the band's speeches and the performances. They didn't do that for any other act. Pretty cool. The energy was mostly positive all around. In another thread I mentioned this one SUPER wasted "bro" who was being a total dick. He kept chanting Eddie's name and yelling "Let's go! Get on with it!" during Letterman's speech. He started singing "the waiting drove me mad" over and over during the band's speeches. Two other Pearl Jam fans had to calm him down and shut him up. An usher got involved once the band started playing because he kept running around trying to hug random women and high five everyone. He was stupid. But everyone else was really respectful and locked in.

Strat! Joey and I carried you with us that night. The whole thing was like a good Shawshank shower.

I figure if ever there was a time to be sincere and earnest on RM, this would be the time. It's a lot more fun to geek out over something we clearly love (into borderline unhealthy territory) than it is to nitpick the shit out of it.

Thanks for that. Yeah, there is always one of those douches at every show. I detest that mold of fan as much as I do the cynical haters.

Really cool that there was that church-like vibe. It really is Bruce-like. If they model their late career like Bruce's late career, which I think they are, I certainly won't complain.

Another thing that reminds me is of the Wrigley shows. In the second one, I swear people were not gonna leave. After 3 hours it really felt like they could have easily stayed for 4 more. Atleast. It was strange and inspiring that this exists. I don't ever want to take it for granted.

Yes, this! This is a lot of what I was referring to - his mincing all over the stage (and Neal Schon's "went into the plastic surgeon and asked for the frozen John Oates" face) just took the air out of the balloon.

I mean, I always wanted it. But I was getting to a point where I was comfortable accepting the reeeeaaaaaaalll possabillliiteeeeee that it wouldn't happen.

Now, though? I'll be crushed if LB is the last proper studio album. I want them to push on. But I think I'll have a really deep appreciation for anything that comes out now. Because every "new" album has a chance to be the last album. That's a weird thing to think about.
