You can always count on a Louis CK hosted episode to be better than average. You're going to get a good monologue, probably with an uncomfortably funny punch line or two, and his presence will elevate an otherwise so-so sketch. This time it was the eyelash sketch, the one set in the 50s diner, and the couch sketch. His pre-taped segment was pretty "Louie" too. The Pepsi one with Beck Bennett was pretty good as well. The last sketch of the night was silly but CK & McKinnon trying not to break made it even better. CK even got a laugh at the goodbyes, which was cut super short this week.
I'm over Baldwin playing The Donald, talk about too much of a good thing. Weekend Update was weak but otherwise no complaints about this week's episode (I'm indifferent towards Chainsmokerz). We'll see how Fallon & his puppy dog enthusiasm plays next week.

Italian Jokes: Funny enough, but his accent is too similar to Borat by the end of the sketch. But then he was reading cue cards pretty regularly, so he was probably figuring out the accent on the fly.

I thought the only thing that made this one funny was how atrocious his accent was

4-18-17: Louis CK/Chainsmokers

Cold Open: I'm so sick of Alec Baldwin.

Monologue: The animal stuff was my favorite stuff from his 2017 material, both the Netflix special and the live set I saw. It plays much stronger as the opener, rather than the heavier stuff he did for those same shows. I don't know why he's recycling the "I get to get mad at someone!" joke from a few years back?

Maybelline: So fun and odd. I loved it.

Thank You Scott: At first I admired their commitment, especially with the toilet gag. But by the end I just wanted it to be over.

Sam's Soda Fountain: I'd wager this was Louie's third writer credit (along with the Monologue and Maybelline). I loved this too.

Pepsi Ad: Just perfect, and probably not a sketch written by Louie. Also I love Beck Bennett.

Chainsmokers #1: I already know how awful these guys are, so I didn't listen to a note of it.

Weekend Update: That "Crinton" flub was brutal. I do love how direct Che and Jost are with their criticism of the Trump administration (even if they're not all home runs). The Spanish Jesus Re-Painter gal is a real fun surprise return. All things considered, I've come to look forward to the Update sketches. I think Che and Jost have a good vibe going.

The O'Reilly Factor: This wasn't worth one less Louie sketch.

Birthday Boy: Fantastic. I was having trouble breathing. Another Louie sketch? Or maybe Julio Torres?

Sectional Couches: One of the more absurd sketches I've ever seen, but I think the writing credit(s) are up for grabs. And for whatever reason, it's taken me a long time to come around Aidy Bryant. But I'd say she's one of my favorite performers now (though this has been helped by watching her in other projects)

Chainsmokers #2: Both times, I dragged the app's streaming slider from before their first note to the post-performance applause. This is very hard to do with a Firestick!

This was an awesome episode. Any of my gripes are with Alec Baldwin, the Chainsmokers, and then to a considerably lesser degree, the writers and Lorne.

As a Louie fan, it was heartening. I've been bummed out by his 2017 material, and it was great fun to see him reframe some of the lighter stuff in the monologue, and then create absurdist sketch comedy for the bulk of the show.

I pretty much hated this episode except for Birthday Boy, Sectional Couches, and Italian Jokes. Time to let Darrell Hammond take over on Trump.

I was pretty bummed when I saw Louis live in January, and he wasn't any better during the monologue. I did enjoy when Louis continued to do his accent during the sign off.

Why didn't you like the Pepsi sketch?

Thought it was good, just don't think I laughed at it. I remember talking with my girlfriend after the episode about not laughing at all until Weekend Update.

Cold Open: Such lightweight material in a week that our president has gone out of his way to kick a nuclear war hornets' nest while mistakingly bombing US allies? Spineless and not even a little funny.

Sean Spicer: Please give this character a rest.

I thought the Fallon episode was okay. Weekend Update was the best part but the Family Feud sketch wasn't bad and the basketball pre-taped short made me laugh. I wondered which former cast mate would appear with him, my guess was either Dratch with the Boston Couple or Tina Fey for an Update segment. Casting him as Kushner was good, even better that he had no lines. I expected Harry Styles would show up in a sketch and he was in two. Not much of a comedic presence (he's not the next JT) but the kid can sing. I thought the Sean Spicer sketch was okay, maybe because it was noticeably shorter than the previous ones. You know they will go to that well again when Melissa McCarthy hosts next month.
They have the next two weeks offs before finishing the season with three straight new ones. Chris Pine, McCarthy, and The Rock Dwayne Johnson will be the hosts.
