Skitch is definitely right about A New Dawn. I totally like Kanan now after reading it.durdencommatyler wrote:Thanks Ruddo. Wait, so I'm watching some Star Wars theory YouTube videos and this dude just said that the Aftermath books have basically shown the origin of The Knights of Ren.
Is that true?

Re: Star Wars new canon books & timeline
Ok. I finished Thrawn. It's as much a double biography almost of him and his rise to power as it is about Governer Price.
Without giving anything away it's a typical SW new canon book that suggests and hints at lots of things and leaves you with more questions and wild theories than it anything it gives you.
It just feels like a vehicle for hints and suggestsions rather than a worthwhile story.
I'm not sure if I enjoyed it as a story and the few tantalising carrots it dangles as they relate to the Emperors aims and the outcomes (there are none) left me a bit cold.
I love theories as much as anyone but this was a lot to get through for only a few big questions that don't feel worth it. They just don't have much gas in the tank of that makes sense.
I'm sure others will disagree an might enjoy it I dunno.

I struggled with the first two and never even finished the last one.
Lot of the same problems in it as in the Thrawn book.

Re: Star Wars new canon books & timeline
I find "Star Wars Explained" to be a great resource for book summaries and keeping up with cannon. I have not enjoyed very many Star Wars novels, cannon OR legends, but with these videos, I can skip the book and watch a 5 minute video.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

This is like anti-Classic B. Should we have a new term for it? New Wave B?

Finished "A New Dawn". I like it, we get the introduction to Hera and Kanan, find out a little backstory on Kanan, get introduced to the Ghost, and a pretty cool bad guy in Count Vidian.

So this might be cool. It was the first of the new canon books. A kind of young love story about two kids that join the imperial academy and their views get polarised and one ends up joining the rebellion. It runs with events of the OT as its backdrop.
It's being made into an online manga adaptation.

OK, well, that same guy does a monthly "cannon update," where he goes through "major" developments in the cartoons, comics, novels, etc. I used to subscribe to the channel, but it's overwhelming with daily videos about minutia that I don't give a shit about, but if you sought him out for keeping up to date with the novels, there's probably no better resource.darth_vedder wrote:You did good!B wrote:Wait. Thanks for sharing, I think I'll subscribe to the youtube page. I doubt I ever will read most of the books / comics so this will be my way to keep up with things.

Re: Star Wars new canon books & timeline
I also posted this in the Ahsoka thread but:
Finished the Ahsoka book yesterday.
I really enjoyed it. It's definitely a YA book. There are really heavy and interesting themes that aren't explored as deeply as I'd have liked. But I love the exploration of the character and I really liked the new characters that were introduced. It's awesome to see a Star Wars world mostly populated by woman (and even a gay woman at that). On both sides we see strong women in lead roles affecting the plot and having an impact on the characters. I fucking LOVE that!
The book is a bit light on mythology, which is fine. It's really a character piece. It reminded me of a three or four episodes arc on Clone Wars. It had that kind of feel to it. But the mythology stuff that they gave us was fantastic. A lot to think about. I won't get into details for those that haven't read it yet but it raises some interesting questions and further strengthens the allure of Ahsoka Tano. Her ability. And her place in the larger scheme of things.

Im working through Catalyst now and it is so uneven. There are moment where I find myself entirely engaged, then 11 pages about the texture of Kyber crystals.

Yeah, it can be. It ended up being more on the engaging side for me, but I can see why it would be divisive.@SkitchP wrote:Im working through Catalyst now and it is so uneven. There are moment where I find myself entirely engaged, then 11 pages about the texture of Kyber crystals.

Finished this last night. I really enjoyed getting way more in depth background to Krennic. Definitely makes the scenes with Tarkin in Rogue One have so much more weight. However, the depiction of Lyra in the book doesn't feel like it matches up well with what goes on in R1 at all. Overall I liked the book, but it definitely felt like it was anticlimactic given that R1 takes place only a couple of years later so even the escape of Galen and Lyra felt very hollow.
I guess the other books felt like they had a lot higher stakes than this did to me.
After I got through the 2 I was most interested in (ahsoka and a new dawn) Im just going to go in canon order from here on out. Up next? Lords of the Sith and then Tarkin.
