That is just such an unbelievably fucked up thing to say about someone who just committed suicide, even if he was saddened (which I believe he was).
When taken out of context, it does sound terrible. Reading the full interview makes more sense about Eddie's mindset at the time. It certainly appears to have really affected him back then.

"You know," Eddie says, his voice trembling, hoarse, no more than a whisper, "I always thought I'd go first."
"I don't know why I thought that," he says finally. "It just seemed like I would. I mean, I didn't know him on a daily basis -- far from it. But, in a way, I don't even feel right being here without him. It's so difficult to really believe he's gone. I still talk about him like he's still here, you know. I can't figure it out. It doesn't make any sense."
"I remember when he got sick in Rome -- I didn't realise then that it was actually a suicide attempt -- I was in Seattle. I went out to grab something to eat and I saw the headlines. That he was in a coma. I just freaked out, man. I went home and made some phone calls, tried to find out what the fuck was going on. Then I started pacing the house and started to cry."
"I just kept saying, 'Don't go, man, just don't fuckin' go....just don't go.' I kept thinking, "If he goes, I'm fucked."
Even in the context of the entire interview it sounds like a guy trying to make another person's tragedy about him. I'm not saying that's how he meant it, but that's how it comes off.

I don't disagree at all. Maybe I'm being an apologist for him but I've known alot of people (including myself) that handle death very poorly.

Edit: sorry This is a good conversation that requires thought out responses and I have to split. Don't mean to cut it short.

Anyone else having trouble posting over at the pit? I log in and out and still get blue threads/can't post; cleared history/cookies and still same thing. Still a sucker for punishment over there...

Are you making sure to log in under Forum Account and not just the page as a whole? If you hover over My Account, one of the options that shows up is Forum Account. I know it's possible to be logged onto PearlJam.com but still be logged out of your Forum Account (if that makes sense).

Hahaha no worries, don't be sorry.

So I just tried logging out of everything, going to forum, trying to post, it asks you to login, login, it works, but still not logged into full site, it's progress. Thanks. Site is super slow anyway due to ticket stuff.

I can't even bring the forum up at all right now, it's probably getting hammered.

Yeah, the thing is at a standstill to crawling pace; understandable. But I seem to be all logged in and working...

Would it be totally naive of me to suggest that it might be the very opposite? I didn't feel like this at all about this response. I think what Ed meant, and what he was trying to say, was 'I'm so shocked. All this time I was thinking I was the one who was genuinely this depressed. And then this happens.' Yes, it's about Ed, but so what? Grief makes us look at ourselves and question our own thoughts and feelings, and often we find we've been selfish about our approach to life. I'd like to think that Ed is doing that here. "I don't even feel right being here without him." That's the context from which I think we should be reading this, imho.

And in fairness I would imagine that someone with the emotional ability to write the lyrics that EV had in him at this point in time would connect with such feelings and experiences in ways that I can't imagine or necessarily understand. In order to write about something you have to be able to inhabit it, be it a feeling or a perspective or an actual act. If that process means that sometimes you get caught out making an occasional observation that could be construed as 'dumb' or even perhaps narcissistic then so be it.

I think what you're saying is true, and was probably the majority of his feelings at the time. He did allegedly go on to say:
"Fuck it fuckin' all," he hisses with a terrible vehemence, and I don't know where he's going now. "You know, all these people man," he says, " all lining up to say that his death was so fucking inevitable...well, if it was inevitable for him, it's gonna be inevitable for me, too, if this continues." "That's why this could be our last show in fuckin' for ever as far as I'm concerned. Kurt's death has changed everything. I don't know if I can do it any more.
So I think Eddie was concerned that if Kurt couldn't handle the pressure of fame, Eddie felt he had no hope because he already wasn't coping with being in the limelight as it was.

This talk is reminding me of why I identified with PJ and Ed so much as a kid and as a teenager. Ed would always go to great, and clumsy philosophical effort to empathise with people, and a lot of the time he spoke and there was a "Thinking out loud" sense of "I don't understand this, but damn, I'm trying; here me out while I try to explain it to you, and then you can tell me whether what I'm saying is bullshit or not, and that's how we'll talk this through." I always did that, still do, and so did / does Ed. Sometimes he'll sound like a douche in that process but I see him as socially clumsy, not emotionally unintelligent or cold.
