As career politicians and party players, they would have been far more capable of navigating the process and strategizing responses to events, and would have been much less inclined to cater to extremes.
I don't think either would have picked so many fights and then immediately backed down each time (often before the threat has time to generate a response), or exacerbated the NK situation so much.
Both would push for ideas I am ideologically opposed to.

Cruz is a corrupt asshole and Rubio is an idiot. trump is both of those things without any political experience or knowledge. None are acceptable as leaders

They are both part of an infrastructure, and they serve the infrastructure as much as themselves. There are certain ideas that Good Conservatives (TM) know are good for talking and fundraising, but are not good for the party if enacted. Same with Dems.
Politics is basically a campaign money industry, where the lesser client (the public) is also capable of firing you. Serving the machine, good or bad otherwise, moderates a lot of ideologically extreme ambitions.
Republicans are aiming big right now because they can blame on Donald actions they would never want credited to themselves.

Two anecdotes aren't much to go off of, but both Sheriff Clarke and Sheriff Arpaio were or are big fans of national press. Is it wrong to assume that if a county Sheriff has regular national press coverage, he's probably an asshole?

I came here to post this. The thing is: I think the confusion from the first paragraph comes from the fact that Trump does not have a good vocabulary or a good grasp of how the English language works (or, if you're being generous, he doesn't think before he puts a sentence together), so there's some tense confusion. I think he wanted to say, "[Jackson] would have been really angry that he saw what was happening...He would have said, there's no reason for this." Past tenses and the conditional are hard for some people; I see it in my students' writing all the time (note: usually people who are ELL, or otherwise lazy AF).
The second part, of course, is what I'm sure Sean Spicer will bungle today at his press briefing.
