I'm with you, man. Like I tried to say earlier. At this point, I'm almost going to be disappointed if this isn't the best SW film so far. No matter how good it is. If it isn't the best, if might be a let down. We'll see.

Empire has the lowest or among the lowest box office gross of all Star Wars films. Even adjusted for inflation.

I don't even know how that scale works. It renders top ten box office films of all time obsolete. But it's still used.
And empire is among the lowest grossing of all Star Wars films.
According to BOM, it is the lowest-grossing. Lots of factors go into that, of course ("sequel" or "series" culture wasn't really a thing at the time, it opened in and was shown in fewer theaters), and usually I would make a snarky comment about how box office receipts don't really equal reception, but a quick survey of reviews at the time do make it sound like it got mixed reviews.

Not this fan. I loved it as a 7-year-old when I saw it in the theater and I love it now. I couldn't even begin to count how many winters I spent pretending I was Luke on Hoth or how many times on the monkeybars at school pretending I was Luke fighting Vader on Bespin.
This is not only my favorite Star Wars film, it's one of my favorite movies ever.

I didn't know anybody that didn't love Empire when it came out but my personal anecdotal experience doesn't mean much I was a little kid. I can imagine some shithead at the time complaining it wasn't as much fun or too dark or it ended on a cliff hanger.
Empires release seemed to be the birthplace of hardcore Star Wars fans and casual fans. The regular cinema going public didn't seem to like it. It was dark. Nobody liked or believed the big reveal. Is Han dead? It didn't have the big sweeping adventure of a new hope and it basically left you hanging. All that. So overall at the casual cinema goer was unhappy whereas it solidified the fan base into hardcore fans.
Weirdly ROTJ garnered a lot of critical praise and was loved by pretty much everyone except a lot of hardcore fans. No accounting for taste.
Empire only came to be loved once it was given context by Jedi. I think a lot of people who had problems with TFA will have the same epiphany once they've seen TLJ
