That plus a double album 'The River' does sound like I'm biting off more than I can chew. I think I'll just get 'The River', let that sink in, then move on to the next.
Good choice. Go for a swim in The River and then do a little Magic.

I'm listening to Magic now... the first song, Radio Nowhere, is really good. :heartbeat:

Track 5 onwards is fucking great.

Let me ponder this over...I'm gonna listen to Bruce on Spotify all day today and I'll get back to you. I know Tom Petty way better than Bruce and I stayed out of that tournament for the same reasons. I'll be lost in this tournament, but maybe I'll have that dark horse / Cinderella team. I'll get back to you...

Yeah this isn't a life or death decision. It's a draft. It's Bruce. It's fun. Fun is good. Good is good.

Excellent stuff.
Not to derail the thread but I was reading a Bruce interview from 2007 and he was singing Brendan O'Briens praises, saying he was instrumental in helping Bruce choose the songs for that record. It's a masterpiece and stands shoulder to shoulder to his 70s/80s stuff IMO (the only bad thing is the mixing).

Interesting that B'OB is seen as public enemy number 1 around here regarding PJ.

"Magic" is a great album, but I think it still sounds pretty lousy -- very muddy, indistinct (especially on the bigger rock songs), with little instrumental separation. I don't know if a waveform would show it to be "brickwalled," but sonically it is the textbook definition of the word in my mind. Judging from the additional material that's emerged from the "Backspacer" and "LB" sessions (which is to say, nothing), I think we have every reason to believe that Brendan could have been equally instrumental in helping PJ pick the best songs for their records, insofar as it probably wasn't a task that took much doing in these cases.

The man used to have "The Touch" when it came to any band he recorded. There's a couple of other bands that he's pushed towards a more commercial edge this century, though. I don't understand why he put the layer of sheen on the last two PJ records or insisted on recording Ed while sick. Maybe artists love him because his process is relaxing to them or something? I also wonder if he insisted on them changing the keys on some songs, too.

Maybe it's because I'm listening on my computer, with JBL Pebbles though not my computer speakers and bc it's Spotify, but I didn't notice it. Then again, I'm kinda going through a crash course, so everything is muddy (albeit a different kind of muddy) for me right now.

Some of the songs from The River make me think this is where Eddie and the Cruisers got their sound inspiration from. That's not a knock btw, who doesn't like Eddie and the Cruisers?

Ok, I'll do this. I'm pretty confident I'll be out by the first round but this time, unlike the Beatles tournament, I won't hate any of you for casting me aside so soon.
