Re: The Running Thread
Nice work, Daft.
My 50K was rough. Second place after 20 miles (about 11 minutes from the lead and gaining), but fell about mile 21. BOTH calves cramped in the aftermath. Hobbled along for 3 miles and got past by a couple of dudes. Calves finally loosened up after hitting some salt tabs at the mile 25 aid station. But shortly after that altitude sickness set in and I was puking every 10 minutes or so. Got passed by a few more dudes. Held on for 7th place.
9,000+ feet of climbing and ~22 miles of running above 9,000 feet on a super technical trail. Beautiful, but brutal AF.

R2D, you're a literal inspiration even though we've never met.verb_to_trust wrote:It's humid and 90 here. Did 6 after work but it was pretty slow 7:56 pace. I'm not sure I'll be able to build up to say a 45 mile week. Will I still be able to get the job done and slide in sub 4 hours? Sorry to hear about the aches and paint Daft, hopefully just stuff you can work through.
Verb, do a little hunting on the net for 3 day a week training plans. I came across one where one day is a long run at easy pace, but you gradually add miles at marathon pace at the end of the run. I did that today. It's great to learn to run fast when you're tired. The middle workout is Yasso 800 repeats to build speed, and the third workout is marathon pace running. I think this would be great for someone who is busy, does other activities, and, most importantly, eats right. I am a nighttime binge eater, so I need extra miles just to burn calories.
You are going to crush 4 hours. You just need to average 9 minute and 9 second miles. I think as long as you continue to build your long runs and have two or three 20s from late July to mid-August, you'll be around 3:30 - 3:40.

Re: The Running Thread
2 more things:
1) Try to make sure your routes include hills. Also, run in the humidity sometimes. Not your long runs, if you can help it, but some of the 6-7 mile days. If you train in shite conditions, you'll be prepared for the worst but dominate a perfect day.
2) Looks like there are some days scheduled prior to the race to run the course. I am hoping to get down for one of the later ones. I'd love be to do a 20 on the actual course.

Re: The Running Thread
That's some good advice, daft. Hills are very underrated.daft twat wrote:Try to make sure your routes include hills.
My biggest piece of advice for this thread is to make sure your easy runs ARE easy. I've been messing around with 6:30 to 6:45 miles for years and can only get down to a ~6:15 average for a half marathon. That's pathetic. Not in terms of the time, but in terms of stretching my VO2 max. Someone running 6:30 miles consistently should average sub-6 miles for a half fairly easily.
It's funny, I spent much of the past 10 years calliing slow runs "junk miles." When, in fact, it was my sub-70 10-milers that were the "junk miles." My stock 10-miler should be easier, so I can push it more on tempos, fartleks and intervals.
My 50K marks the end of my training cycle. I'll go into summer hibernation for 2 or 3 months now. When I get back, my running will be a lot more focused. More tempos, trackwork and long runs and fewer 10-milers just for the hell of it.

First real humid day of the year here. Hoping to get 5-6 in tonight if the rain holds off.

Re: The Running Thread
the weather has broken and stayed fairly nice the past month and a half. i now eat lunch on the fly and for me 30-40 minutes i do a HIIT walk/run. basically go out a mile on our road here at work and back.
its a little bit down hill but nothing too bad for 1/2 way out and then back. the problem is its a crappy road that is uneven and at my advanced age running on it is fine until your foot hits an uneven part and then the aches and pains come. can usually try to run through them
roughly 2 miles a day during the work week and just about 23-25 minutes round trip. nothing too spectacular but its better than stewing at my desk

Re: The Running Thread
Decided to change things up and reverse my 5k route this morning. Between taking a wrong turn somewhere and Google Fit deciding not to give me time and distance updates in my headphones, ended up off course and had to double back around 2 miles, for a total of 4.25. On the plus side, I found a new 10k route that follows a river and goes through some woods. Probably do that Sunday.

Re: The Running Thread
Climbing back on the horse tomorrow after taking a week off after my 50K.
Consumed about 5,000 calories a day during that time and gained 6 lbs.
Really it was 17 lbs., but 11 of that was rehydrating after the race.

You ride a fucking horse? No wonder you get so many miles in. Seems like cheating.

I felt like I had a great run tonight but the timer said otherwise. After resting for about 4 days I was 2 minutes slower than my last recorded time.

I'm congested. Can feel it in my ear on the side I slept on last night. Possibly allergies I don't know. Stuff like this is what derailed me last year.

Push through it! Leg injury and diarrhea are really the only things that should keep you off the road. I have a bitch ass cold right now. Lost my voice completely on Wednesday. Nose is a faucet. Still grinding, though. Farmer blowing along the way and coughing like Doc Holiday afterwards. Still got my 40 miles in this week in 5 days. Now I starting adding 4 miles a week. I'm concerned with this week due to travel plans and work stuff, but I'm hoping to start the week with a 13 or 14 miler tomorrow.verb_to_trust wrote:I'm congested. I pushed through and did 4 miles on the treadmill. Things got ugly in the bathroom afterwards but I'm glad I didn't take the day off. Thanks man. We're about 16 weeks out.

Well done! Making training public like this is great for accountability, especially if, like me, you're training alone.verb_to_trust wrote:daft twat wrote:Push through it! I had to use the treadmill for 6 miles yesterday. Went 1 easy (8:13), 3 hopeful mp (7:13), and 2 easy. I find treadmill running much harder than real running. Going 7:13 on a treadmill feels like going 110 in my old Camry.
Ps. I thought we still had 17 weeks!
