I feel very lucky to have been in attendance at the Showbox for their first gig back together in 2010. Will never forget that night.

I felt for many years now that the whole gen-x angry depressed, and misunderstood gig was over for us, as part of the American culture. Like we were washed up or sold out as much as the hippy turned yuppy generation that i grew up despising... Yet the feeling of dissociation from the rest of the world seems just as strong to me right now, in this moment, as i ever felt it 20 some odd years ago.
On the whole, i was never a super engrossed fan of soundgarden, but always a fan, at any rate, and had great respect for these guys, so it's surprising to feel like this as a result of Cornell's death. But it says something to me about the far reaching effect those years had on me, the effect that band had, and the effect losing yet ANOTHER musician who made those years bearable for me. Im so tired of the loss associated with that time period. It's hurtful and continues to communicate to me what significance this particular generation of music played in my life.

there's a cloud over the city today. like someone pointed out earlier in this thread or the other, Cornell was a Seattle native, the only true Seattle native of the "big 4" singers. Went to school here, worked here, performed here. our local station is playing SG all day, with stories from the DJs in between from people in town sending emails. a lot of sad ones, but balanced with a lot of funny memories. one stuck out to me... a woman wrote in talking about how her dad worked at Pike Place for 30+ years, and was super into the whole "grunge" thing when it hit bc he knew all the bands very well since they hung out nearby or in the market. one day in the 80s, he was at working in the market, and he was sitting next to a group of 4 young guys whom he knew, and they were very excited bc they came up with a new band name. they told him "Soundgarden", and he didn't have the heart to tell them it was a dumb name because they were so excited

It makes perfect sense. I never lived for Michael Jackson, Prince or George Michael, but I respected them and was terribly sad when they died. Then Scott Weiland died last year and it really hurt, though it was something any fan of his was prepared for the last 10+ years. I was/am a huge fan of STP and felt that Scott was terribly misunderstood. This is totally unexpected though. To me, Chris and Mike have been examples of how you can be at rock bottom and come out of it. I've been to a lot of shows of both and never seen either anything but exhilarated to be on stage playing with their brothers.

I was 13-14 (1993) when I started really listening to music and these bands shaped me. I've been really down since last year because of politics and the direction of my country and I often think of what EV would say. It would be comforting. It was when he spoke at RRHOF. I remember hearing the VFC shows back in 1995 and feel like it alerted me to that issue. So many more like that since then. It's not gospel, but more than half of my life I've breathed their music and shows. I'll listen to these bands until my last day. It's painful to think that he is gone and won't be sharing any new words.

i definitely like Soundgarden as a band name. just the image of a middle-aged guy laughing at a bunch of young 20 year olds about their band name brings a much-needed smile to my fave

my wife is working in seattle this week..the vibe in the office is pretty low but she said they're blaring some tunes when they can

I keep thinking of them too. This ultimately won't alter my life in any real way, it is devastating for them. Honestly, my emotions are changing a little bit since finding out it is officially a suicide. I've gone from being in shock and really sad to kind of pissed at Chris for doing this to all those that loved him. His family, friends, and band mates. Especially after dealing with the deaths of Andy, Kurt, Layne, etc., I can't imagine what thought process led him to doing the same to those that love him. I'm super sad for the torture that that kind of mental state must be for the person living it, and pissed at him for breaking his kids' hearts forever. God damnit.

I thought I had read Chris converted to some form of Christianity after he married his current wife. Makes the decision to end his life a little more confusing as I've always thought the motivation would be the nothingness death would bring. I'm 32 and don't really know what to think about the afterlife though. Maybe he wasn't sure either.
