There have been a lot of musician deaths during my lifetime but this one and Weiland have hit the hardest, this one perhaps even more so just because it came as so much more of a shock. I always feel a vague twinge of sadness when a musician whose music means something to me passes away, but these guys who were there as I was really discovering the art form -- I dunno, it's like someone came into my house with a big stick of dynamite and blew out the foundation. Now how's the thing supposed to stand? This would become the music against which all other music would be measured -- not in a raw quality sense, necessarily, an "is this as good as than that?" thing, but rather "does it take me to the kinds of far-flung places that I know this stuff can take me? does it tell me something about the world that I don't already know? does this music tell some part of my story?" So much of how my brain processes music is built on this stuff -- on Nirvana, on STP, on Soundgarden. Of course we still have the music, thank goodness. But there's just something that happens when the living, breathing spirit behind the work ceases to exist. It's not easy to explain, and is probably not practical. But I think it's nonetheless sincere and speaks to the idea of art as a sort of connective fiber between people who have never met. No question Chris Cornell impacted my life in a profound way. I wish he could have found the strength.

I have had very real experience with both suicide and depression involving those close to me; while I have an immense amount of sympathy for anyone struggling with the latter, the former is still an immensely, almost disgracefully, selfish act. The pain and torment felt by Cornell's children will be lifelong if that's what this is. It's truly very sad in many respects.

Totally agree. No matter how bad life feels, you just can't do that to the people that love you and depend on you. It's just brutal.

This is dumb and misses the point that people who are driven to suicide by depression are often (irrationally, yes, because that is how depression works) convinced the people they leave behind will be better off without them in their life.

It's odd. I have a different take about those left behind. And Ive lost friends and family to suicide.
In a way you don't get to judge them or call them selfish. If you were doing your job as a sibling or friend it would not have happened. So you don't get to them berate them doing that because clearly you were off watch and not there for that person.

It's a hot topic. I don't judge anyone chooses that path. It's their path nobody else's. Religious hangover making it a sin and catastrophe is where that thinking comes from.
We need to adjust our thinking. We weren't in that persons head and dealing with their load.

It doesn't miss that point at all, but the fact remains that they're mistaken.

I find it disrespectful and disproportionate to understate or ignore the hurtful consequences of making such a permanent, irreversible decision. Inflicting that degree of anguish on your loved ones would, in most other circumstances, attract moral condemnation and I don't see why this choice is necessarily different.

There's no lack of sympathy here for Cornell, or anyone suffering depression, but it pales in comparison to the degree of sympathy I have for his wife and children who will carry this with them for the rest of their lives.

Anyway, this isn't an argument I wanted to get into. I'll leave it here.
