Tomorrow is the 21st anniversary of Down on the Upside's release too.

I mentioned in the other thread that I just realized Ian Curtis also hung himself on May 18th, which is downright creepy if you ask me.

That album helped my define my high school senior>freshman in college year. The aggression. The drums. The vocal. The way it kept opening up, the more time you gave it. I didn't discover the last 4 songs for over 6 months, I was so taken with the first 12 and then those final four became my favorite part of the album.

Almost broke my polk audios just now, blasting Burden in my Hand. 21 years later and this album hasn't gotten old.

SWITCH OPENS>OVERFLOATER>AN UNKIND!!!

RIP Chris. Sunshower is as beautiful today as it was the first time I heard it. Thankful I got to see you play live.

edit: Boot Camp is the best "pink floyd type song" that anyone has done since the original band broke up in the early 80's.

Down On The Upside is amazing. I eventually listened to it sometime after Superunknown. It felt like a juggernaut lumbering in!

While not as accessible as SU it's definitely a benchmark in 'we didn't create the album you expected to love or be disappointed by, we created this instead.'

DOTU. Probably the best ever 1,2,3 on any album, Soundgarden or otherwise - 'Pretty Noose', 'Rhinosaur', 'Zero Chance'. Brings me right back to great teenage times of drinking with my buddies and generally with nothing to worry about.

Y'know, I loved Nirvana but when Kurt died it didn't really upset me that much. Maybe it's because it always seemed inevitable (especially after his overdose in Rome), or because I was only listening to Nirvana for a couple of years and they weren't very ingrained in my life. But it Chris it seems so different - I've been listening to him for nearly 25 years. The guy seemed finally happy in his 50's, finally comfortable in his skin and then this? Still doesn't make sense.

He seemingly had everything - beautiful family, immense talent, fame, fortune, universal respect, good looks - hell, they guy even had a full head of hair in his 50's! - but it seems the one thing he didn't have was peace of mind. Such a sad tale.

I think back to those DOTU times, and tonight I think - when did life get so serious?

You should extend this to track 4. "Dusty" might be my favorite song on the album.

You could be right but I always spent a lot of time rewinding to track 1 when 'Dusty' started, just 'cos they were so good. Certainly a fine song in its own right though.

Nice, but how hard would it have been to get the actual lyric correct, and not make it look like a real Cornell quote/lyric? This is the kind of thing that defeats the purpose. Dummies.

Our cultural expectations are pretty low here. Usually that billboard is an ad for a gambling boat.

The education continues. Blasted some Superunknown in the car and my boy (5) says 'Daddy, I don't like this. I Love it". I already envy his teenage years getting high listening to these records.

My 8 year old ( who I've totally gotten into Steely Dan, btw) didn't hate Birth Ritual and they both liked Seasons yesterday.

Soundgarden is dead. It'd be crazy if that guy was thinking that there would even be a .00001% chance.
