Covering Soundgarden
Assuming Pearl Jam continues to play live shows following the death of Chris Cornell, what do you think the odds are that they regularly cover a Soundgarden song(s)? And if you think they will cover SG, which song(s) will they play?

Re: Covering Soundgarden
I dunno if I can see them fully covering songs, Ed doesn't want to embarrass himself. Maybe adding tags to Daughter or something.
Didn't they used to tag Outshined every so often?

Re: Covering Soundgarden
Well, that's kinda at the heart of my question. Is there anything in SG's catalog that Ed can reasonably sing? It's been so long since I've listened to any deep cuts that I just can't recall a Soundgarden song that was fully within Ed's range or ability. I can absolutely see them tagging Daughter with something, that's a good call. Still curious if there's a full song they could do.bodysnatcher wrote:I dunno if I can see them fully covering songs, Ed doesn't want to embarrass himself. Maybe adding tags to Daughter or something.

Re: Covering Soundgarden
Sounds like they aren't really in that headspace anymore, and they never covered and Alice or Nirvana songs either.
Plus it would be murder on Ed's voice.
Maybe a few more TotD songs.

Re: Covering Soundgarden
How can we assume their headspace following Cornell's death? And I know the deaths of Layne and Kurt impacted the band a lot, but it can't quite come close to this one. I can't see them not doing something to honor Chris at their shows whenever it is they may play again.BurtReynolds wrote:Sounds like they aren't really in that headspace anymore, and they never covered and Alice or Nirvana songs either.

The voice part is the interesting thing. Is there anything Ed could find a way to sing reasonably well?
Wouldn't the Temple songs be just as difficult to sing as any Soundgarden songs?

Re: Covering Soundgarden
What Soundgarden songs sound the most PRAMG-y? The band that would cover something called Fell on Black Days died a long time ago. Or if they tried, it would sound happy and gross.

Re: Covering Soundgarden
Attrition would absolutely work, and it's pretty PRAMGy. And if Ed could sing it, I'd love to hear PJ do Burden In My Hand.

Sorry for the edits to that last post. Thoughts change while listening to the songs.

Attrition was my first thought too. It's basically a Riot Act song.

Re: Covering Soundgarden
Doesn't have to be SG songs, I'm sure Ed could pull off a CC solo song if he wanted. I don't see it happening tho. They'll either write a song about him or dedicate a song to him.

Re: Covering Soundgarden
When Matt first joined, Ed made the comment that they may work up Room A Thousand Years Wide because it was a Matt song and he felt it was one he could sing. That would be cool, but I really don't see them doing any SG tunes. More than likely, Ed will write a special tribute tune for him.

Re: Covering Soundgarden
I think it will be way too emotional for all involved to cover SG.

On that Eddie Vedder Radio Show he did a couple years back, when introducing Ty Cobb he said something like "If our group were ever to cover a Soundgarden song, this would be my choice"

I could see them doing Times of Trouble. Well within Ed's range and has a nice shared history with the band.
Think I’m going to try being kind to everyone a chance.

The most recent EV radio set was 19 years ago. Tastes may have changed in that time span.Farmer John wrote:On that Eddie Vedder Radio Show he did a couple years back, when introducing Ty Cobb he said something like "If our group were ever to cover a Soundgarden song, this would be my choice"

Re: Covering Soundgarden
I'm betting they stay away from covering any Soundgarden songs. But I could see them coming up with some other song to cover in tribute to Chris in the future.
But if they do cover something, I think I'd rather hear them do something from Euphoria Morning or Seasons or something like that.

Re: Covering Soundgarden
I would hope that if PJ covers SG that they would rework it to meet the bands strength instead of trying to replicate.
