Like many of us, I've listened to a lot of Soundgarden over the last few days, but in the process of listening, I keep forgetting why and find myself thinking "man, I hope they play this next time I see them!"; then, of course, I remember.

Yep. Or a lyric stands out and you just get that sinking feeling. And with his lyrics that happens quite a bit.

I like Soundgarden but listening to a full album gives me a headache. A few songs at a time are totally fine though. Am I getting old/lame?

They're not really an album band for me. Too much filler.

A few of the songs have certainly taken a darker tone for me the past few days... Blow Up The Outside World hit me particularly hard the other day while I was walking to work...

When I gave King Animal a spin on Thursday I found myself thinking "I hope the finish this next album soon..." and it hit me again...

The early stuff yeah. DOTU for example has quality tracks front to back it's just too long for a lot of folks.

Same. Every album produced some top notch songs but I'd rarely, if ever, listen to one start to finish. I always found them slightly exhausting, and not in a satisfying way

I don't think I ever really noticed how relentlessly dark CCs writing was (at least for Soundgarden)

Can't say I ever found them exhausting. Actually I like how involving the sound is. Soundgarden was probably the most energetic of the grunge bands. Big part of why I liked them.

So much this.

I've also been listening to a ton of Soundgarden lately, and there have been so many lines that have struck me in ways they never had before.

It's kind of like love songs when you're dating someone or break-up songs after a, well, a break-up: you notice the things that were already there.

And damn it I know I've read something about this but I just keep getting lyrics to break-up and love songs when I search for the study.

One passage has really jumped out at me from "Burden In My Hand":

So kill your health and kill yourself
And kill everything you love
And if you live you can fall to pieces
And suffer with my ghost

Fuckin' hell.

These kinds of lyrics dominate his SG material. They're everywhere. I used to think it just kinda sounded "cool" (for lack of a better word) to have such dark and deathly lyrics. Now, obviously it's just terribly sad and it makes you wonder how much time Chris spent in such a dark headspace. How much of his lyrics were a direct window into a tormented soul and mind?

One of the things that seemed triumphant or comforting about SG, for me, was the fact that the lyrics were so dark, and yet all the guys (maybe not Ben at times) seemed so well.adjusted. They went through hell and are living to tell about it. Now in hindsight I too can't help but question the hidden pain Chris must have had.....
Blow up the Outside World, one of my favorites, hit me really hard listening to it this weekend.
Nothing seems to kill me no matter how hard I try
Nothing is closing my eyes
Nothing can beat me down for your pain or delight
And nothing seems to break me
No matter how hard I fall nothing can break me at all
Not one for giving up though not invincible I know

If I could spin a web
I would sit and wait for you
I wouldn't need a stone, I'd just poison you and tie you up
And you would be a bird
A beautiful crescent one
And your eyes would beg
But I'm just doing my job
Standing here in front of you
Killing birds
