The world doesn't revolve around you in that scenario. Especially if you're an employer. Just my two cents. People have a strange way of making things about them that aren't when someone dies.

He doesn't have to make a fucking grand entrance or sing a song in dedication. Just come for like 15 minutes, support your band mates, tell his kids what was good about their dad and leave. If someone doesn't like it, tough shit. They will appreciate it later. Because it's the right thing to do.

If anything, the most reductive and simple-minded scenario to Eddie Vedder not showing up at his longtime friend/mentor's funeral is that he's just a selfish dick. I know you guys love doing the Ed-only-likes-money schtick but come on.

It doesn't take an off-the-charts EQ to think that maybe there is a lot at play, in fact decades at play, that contribute to this situation.

Or, I don't know, instead of rock gods CHRIS CORNELL and EDDIE VEDDER, just picture them as two buddies you went to high school with. Take them off their pedestal and you'll realize they go through the same crazy, trite, childish, complex bullshit we all go through. They're allowed.

I don't think he's being selfish. I think he's being a pussy. Funerals suck. They can get messy and emotional and awkward. Man up, be there for the family that want you there. Apologize to the ones that don't. Tell everyone that his life meant something to you and that it means more than another show in Amsterdam. Say goodbye. It's the only chance he will have.

1000% with stip on this. And not b/c it's Eddie Vedder. But b/c I've been to plenty of funerals where the interpersonal dynamics are way more complicated than, "You just show up no matter what." The world (or at least, my world) is not nearly that black and white.

In ideal circumstances, of course every one who loved the deceased should absolutely be there. And maybe Ed is simply being a dick, but I highly doubt it. My uneducated guess is that there is more at play here, especially considering the unhinged tweets from the mother-in-law that continue on.

Perhaps Ed never liked Vicky Cornell. Perhaps no one did. Have none of you ever been in a situation where a friend has been in a shitty relationship for years and you were desperate to get them out of it?

But that's why this is so difficult. That's just one of a hundred scenarios and we just don't know. But my imagination is certainly big enough (and backed up by enough real life experience) that I can easily see all the different why's and wherefore's that would make this a complicated situation.

It's funny how judgmental we all get when a celebrity is involved. Immediately, all sense of nuance goes out the door and we forget how messy and bewildering real life can be, especially when someone dies and especially when someone dies under the circumstances Chris died under.

But that's just it. You're assuming that Eddie is an asshole and people show up at funerals no matter what. I'm assuming that the situation is complicated and people show up at funerals sometimes and sometimes not for myriad reasons.

Do I want to live in a nice world where Chris Cornell's Hunger Strike partner shows up to his funeral and not only does the eulogy but also sings both parts of their classic song together? Of course! That's a really nice world! Do I also understand that life sometimes sucks and people grieve in their own ways and family dynamics are complicated at best, fucked up at worst? Yep, that too.

I don't know, I'm way over my ski's here. Just trying to keep an ounce of humility as someone who literally knows no one involved.

Thinking about all the times I got to see Chris Cornell play live. I think this is everything...

Soundgarden 2013
Soundgarden + Hunger Strike w/ PJ/TOTD (Bridge School 2014, both nights)
Sonic Evolution at Benaroya Hall 2015 (TOTD and Mad Season songs)
TOTD in Seattle (2016)

So I count 7 different times I saw him live, may be leaving one or two out but I don't think so.

Oddly my most vivid Chris Cornell live memory was when I saw Pearl Jam in 1998. Matt Cameron had very recently joined the band, and I was PUMPED at the idea of a TOTD reunion at that time. I started a "Chris Cornell! Chris Cornell! Chris Cornell!" chant, though if I'm being honest it's very possible that nobody joined me in this chant.

Anyway that solo show was amazing. At the Paramount Theater, I had front row seats in the balcony so a much better seat than half the main floor (in my opinion). My first time seeing him live - the man was just simply amazing. A freak.

I'll always regret that I didn't get to see him early in his career (much the same way I regret never getting to see Dave A. play with Pearl Jam).

When I finally saw Soundgarden all those years later, it was clear that he had lost some of his range. I guess that happens when you start pushing age 50.

I'll never be able to count how many times me and one of my best friends in high school would sing Hunger Strike to the cassette tape driving around in his beat down old Honda Civic. He sang the CC parts, I sang EV. We still do it to this day after enough beers.

I don't really know where I"m going with this ... just spouting off CC related thoughts that come to mind. I've always said and always will say he is the most uniquely talented singer of all time. Unmatched range, nobody can do what Chris Cornell could do. At the recent shows I saw, he did not even attempt to hit some of those high notes which made it so much more impressive. His vocal talent was so unbelievable that not only would all others fail to mimic it, but the man himself couldn't even get it back. Like a damn unicorn, but it was real for a time. And we were all lucky to have it.

I've enjoyed listening to a LOT of CC this past week. Every time I take my kids out for a walk, I have Siri shuffle an artist from my iTunes library. Last Wednesday afternoon I said "Siri, shuffle all songs by Soundgarden" - then the next morning when I woke up I saw what I thought was a cruel joke, that Chris Cornell had died. Up next tomorrow I'll be spinning Euphoria Morning.

Edit: I bought 3 copies of Down On the Upside in original press vinyl. I opened and listened to one of them. Pretty sure I have the other two buried, unopened somewhere. I was crushed when Soundgarden broke up not long after that.

Edit: How could I forget his role in Singles?!!? He slayed the character in that movie. I wanted to be him so bad.

these are very easy judgements to make about very complicated moments, made a world away by strangers who lack almost any relevant context beyond what they would do in the imaginary scenario created in their head that may have next to no connection to the actual circumstances surrounding the event.
